Comedian Dave Hughes is one of many well-known faces who has been spotted in the crowds at The Block 2023's Auction Day on Charming Street.

And while he didn't snap up one of the homes, it wouldn't have been surprising if he did.

Back in 2017, Hughesy snapped up Josh Barker and Elyse Knowles' house in Elsternwick.

The couple took the risk on auction day to go first and it paid off big time because there was one buyer who was absolutely in love with their home – Hughesy.

The TV personality splashed out $3.067m on the property, a whopping $447,000 over the reserve.

Hughesy first got a look at the Californian Bungalow the couple were building earlier in the 2017 season when he popped by for a cooking challenge.

"Josh and Elyse have done such a good job, and I fell in love with it and here we are," he told 9Entertainment after the winning bid on auction day.

It wasn't the comedian doing the hard work on auction day bidding though, he left that up to buyer's advocate Greville Pabst, who only started bidding halfway through the auction.

"A little bit late," Hughesy joked.

"I was always lingering on the outskirts of the property and I don't live too far away so I was able to drive past and think, 'Gee it's a good spot, it's a good house, it's a good area,' and now we own it."

Hughesy explained how the sale went down down during a stint on The Hundred With Andy Lee in 2022.

"On the day that I bought it, my wife wasn't there," he recalled.

"She had taken the kids to a birthday party and I texted her to say that we'd just bought a house on The Block."

"Don't tell anyone!" she texted back, although it was too late and Hughesy was already being interviewed by Block host Scott Cam.

Scott Cam also spoke about his pal's Block purchase in an interview with 9Entertainment earlier this year.

"I was talking to Hughesy at the Logies about the Block house he bought, and he got slammed in the press for buying a Block house," Scott shared. [But he's just been given a substantial offer from someone to buy it off him.]

"I would have bought that house," Scott admitted, adding it had all the elements a perfect home could offer, including a big master bedroom.

Scott added that Dave was amazed at the opportunity to buy when he realised the fully furnished and decorated home also presented a tax depreciation opportunity.

"He said, "Mate, it's the best investment I've ever bought!" It's never not been leased, he's always had a tenant in it, and he's just been offered [almost double for it.]"
