Who are Kyal and Kara?

Kyal and Kara, from the Central Coast, met when they were aged 16 and 17. The couple tied the knot four years later in 2008, before welcoming their first child Ziya in 2016 and their second, Vada, in 2018.

On their website, the pair revealed that they sparked up a passion for renovation when they first started dating, spending their days buying cheap second-hand furniture and restoring it.

"This is definitely where we got a bug for the 'transformation process'," they wrote.

The couple started renovating their first house in 2008, while Kara completed her physiotherapy degree and Kyal was sub-contracting full-time as a carpenter to local builders.

Towards the end of 2013, the couple completed their renovation and spent three months travelling South America. They were ready for a new challenge, and it came in the form of The Block.

Kyal and Kara starred in the eighth season of The Block in 2014, and proved they were serious competitors with their innovative designing skills.

"Our friends helped us film an audition video that obviously made some kind of impression, because never in our wildest hopes or dreams did we expect it to change our life the way it has, and what a ride it has been!" the couple wrote on their website.

The couple did extremely well, winning three out of eight Room Reveals over the course of the series – one of which was a perfect score.

They ended up coming in third at auction, selling their home for a whopping $2.44million and making a profit of $567,250.

They were beat by Chantelle Ford and Steve O'Donnell, who sold off their home for $2.47million – making a profit of $636,000 alongside their $100,000 prize money.

After the show:

In 2015, Kyal and Kara appeared on Season 1 of the reality show Reno Rumble hosted by Scott Cam. The first season of the show pitted fan favourites from The Block and House Rules against each other, to see who would come out on top.

Kyal and Kara made it all the way to Week 5 before being eliminated, leaving Season 10 Blockheads Ayden and Jess Hogan to take the win – less than two months after they walked away with a $665,000 win on The Block.

Away from TV, Kyal and Kara have project-managed, designed or completed over 35 renovation projects while also running a successful design and construction business.

Out of the many renovations they've done, the couple decided to publish two as a "Reno Series" on their website – one of their Toowoon Bay home and another of a rundown beach shack in Long Jetty, both on the Central Coast.

This too was made into an online series titled Blue Lagoon Build, but in 2021 it was adapted to the big screen and aired on 9Life as a mega two-part TV special, including tons of never-before-seen footage.
