Episode 36 recap: Scott Cam shuts one team down after discovering they're $53k in debt and wet weather causes havoc on site

As Scott Cam says, The Block is a roller coaster of highs and lows. And the contestants are experiencing all the motions in a single day. 

The horrible weather and mud is creating havoc on site yet again.

"The mud is the worst part of this job," Ryan says.

And Dylan and Jenny's landscaper Inge couldn't agree more. 

"We're getting rain every single day. There is so much mud behind me, the water doesn't just go down 100mm it goes down half a metre," Inge tells cameras. 

"I've never seen anything like this. This is hell on earth."

The weather has already delayed Inge by weeks.

"I'm facing the reality that I will have to remove some elements, I don't think my contestants have the budget for it anyway," she says. 

But Inge isn't the only landscaper who's having trouble. 

Over at House 5, Foreman Dan catches Omar and Oz's landscaper Christian pouring a layer of concrete footing for a retaining wall – and no one has inspected it. 

"Mate, you know the rules," Dan gives Christian a stern word. 

"You come to Keith and I for these things before you pour." 

But Christian insists he didn't know any better.

Dan worries Christian hasn't dug down far enough to solid rock and clay before pouring the concrete – meaning when the retaining wall goes in it could be unstable. 

So he calls over The Block's site supervisor Simmo for a second look. Simmo wants Christian to dig down two metres to the bedrock before laying the concrete. 

Christian and Omar and Oz decide they don't have enough time to do that and will just pull the retaining wall from their plans. 

After a bit of pressure from Dan and Simmo, Christian hops into the excavator to start digging and after a whole two minutes he hits rock. Success! 

Simmo says "it's perfect now" and the boys' retaining wall can go ahead after all. 

From one high to another, Ankur and Sharon return to The Block after winning an $80,000 Ford Everest in the Ford Design Centre Challenge.

But the couple don't get to ride the victory wave for very long. 

After the financial audit, Scott and Block accountant Jo discover Ankur and Sharon are massively in debt.

"I'm really concerned about where their budget is going," Jo says to Scotty.  

Jo reveals that Ankur and Sharon are a whopping $53,000 in debt. 

"How did that happen? That's outrageous!" Scott can't believe what he's hearing. 

Scotty and Jo doubt that Ankur and Sharon have even looked at the budget and say they've been "spending willy-nilly".   

"That's so unfair for everyone else, if you spend that much more you've got a massive advantage, we need to pull that in," Scotty says.

With the pair so far in the red, Scott plans to take some drastic measures. 

"I'll have to shut them down," he says.

"Can we cancel their credit cards right now?" he asks Jo. 

Scott and Shelley Craft arrive at House 3 to break the news to Ankur and Sharon. 

And as Ankur broaches the topic of budgets, Scott sees his opportunity to come down hard on the pair. 

"You have got an encyclopedia of unpaid bills," Scott says.

"You're spending as if you think Channel 9 is just gonna give you some more money."

As an accountant, Ankur says he is well aware of the problem. 

But Scott doesn't understand why the couple keep spending if they know they have no money. 

Ankur explains the couple haven't been spending on anything other than trades. 

With the situation looking so desperate, Scotty finds himself with no other choice than to do something he hasn't had to for years – shut down Ankur and Sharon and cut them off from their credit cards.

"I haven't done this since the Oslo, I'm cutting you guys off," Scott tells the pair.

"You're gone."
