The Block 2020 filming restarts with new safety measures in place

The Block will resume production on Monday, May 4, as new precautions are introduced to keep the cast, crew, tradies and general public safe.

Filming of the 2020 season of the show in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton was put on hold 40 days ago as the teams were sent home to be with their families amid the coronavirus threat.

New measures have been put in place, which the show's executive producer Julian Cress believes will keep everyone safe.

"The contestants' renovations will now be compartmentalised to a large degree, and the comings and goings will be able to be carefully monitored by our staff and our building supervisors," said Cress.

Under nationwide COVID-19 guidelines, construction is deemed an essential activity and building was able to be continued on site during the filming shutdown.

The teams and their tradies were briefed on the new rules and the importance of following government guidelines before they returned to site.

All Blockheads and crew have been given the flu shot and there is a nurse on site conducting temperature checks each morning as crew and tradies arrive. The nurse will also monitor the Blockheads on a daily basis.

To comply with social distancing rules, signs have been placed on every entrance to a room, stating how many people are allowed to be in the space based on its square meterage.

As the show returns to filming, Foreman Keith and Foreman Dan will be monitoring and ensuring that all Blockheads, trades and crew follow social distancing and the new rules.

The contestants will also move to shopping online or by appointment off-site and will be given tablets for their online shopping and video conferencing.

The decision to halt filming was made on March 25, an unprecedented move in the show's history.

"We have made this decision to stop production of the show so that our contestants can get home to their families and be there while the country flattens this curve," Cress said.

"The moment we are on the other side of that we will get up and running as quickly as possible.

"I think the trigger was while we wanted to just continue on, we saw whole countries going into immediate lockdown, where their citizens were given little to no notice.

"Because of the geographical issues with our contestants being from all around the country, and because of flights shutting down domestically now, this felt like the last window to get them all back where they need to be."

As the Blockheads, tradies and crew return to site, they are all also being encouraged to use the COVIDSafe app.

The Block 2020 will air on Channel 9 later in the year.
