It was a huge Week 3 on The Block for Queensland couple Kylie and Brad.

They won the first challenge of the season, taking possession of the all-important bonus point penguin and a $5000 cash prize.

They were also the first team to take up Mitre 10's DIY challenge, using $5,000 from the company to install a Shou Sugi Ban wall in their ensuite. Because they successfully installed it themselves, they also won another bonus $5,000!

Yep, Kylie and Brad could celebrate a $10,000 week before it even ended!

Did those good vibes continue during judging?

Kylie and Brad have struggled with nailing their dark and moody style so far and copped lots of criticism from the judges in the first two weeks.

So, this week they enjoyed a visitor from Freedom designer Jack, who shared some much-needed styling advice.

Initially Kylie felt concerned by the idea of someone trying to help with her styling, but that all changed as soon as she and Jack got talking.

He encouraged Kylie and Brad to go for their all-black vision as long as they incorporated more natural timbers to balance it out.

The result? Their monochrome and oak ensuite, which cost them a total of $22,225.

The very first thing the judges noticed when they entered the ensuite was Kylie and Brad's "stunning" Shou Sugi Ban feature wall.

Shou Sugi Ban is a charred Japanese timber normally used for exterior cladding, but Kylie and Brad's idea to use it indoors certainly paid off!

Darren was a huge fan and hoped it would be a recurring theme in House 4.

"I works super well, I hope they love it and I hope they put it in the other bathroom too because that's a big, big tick," he praised.

Shaynna was equally as enthusiastic and especially loved its contrast with the light timber of their vanity.

"It's a beautiful combo... That's the look we were talking about, that modern contemporary Australian beach house."

It wouldn't be Kylie and Brad bathroom without black toilet paper, would it?

Darren also praised the ensuite lighting.

They were a huge improvement on the lights Kylie and Brad used in their Guest Bathroom, which you may recall he labelled as being like something out of a "mid-2010s night club".

In contrast, these simple black lights felt "modern".

"They have what they were trying to achieve, that difference in height and sculptural form," he said.

Marty was impressed by how well Kylie and Brad have listened to his feedback.

"This is staying true to what you want to see in them, which is a little bit of pizzazz, not to lose their personality," he told Shaynna.

He felt like they'd "warmed up the bathroom" by toning down the heaviness of too much black.

"This isn't loud, it's not throwing too much at the buyer," he said.
