Interior designer reveals the most common styling mistake renovators make - and exactly how to fix it

EXCLUSIVE: As seasoned house flippers, Maddy and Charlotte were always confident when it came to building – but as far as styling went, they never claimed to be experts.

In previous weeks The Block judges harshly labelled their style "vanilla" and the girls were hoping to change that.

With an impeccable eye for detail Jack gave the girls some "much-needed" styling advice, shared why beginners shouldn't be afraid of bold designs and revealed the most common mistake renovators make when selecting items for their home.

The most frequent mistake Jack sees home stylists make is "using furniture pieces that are too big or too small".

It's a simple mistake to make, but according to Jack the solution is just as easy.

"There are many helpful size guides online that will help guide you in selecting the right size pieces," he told 9Entertainment.

There's so many different factors to consider when renovating – lighting, colour palette, artwork. But the one thing you should always start with when planning your design is layout.

"Planning how the space will function is crucial. Think about the flow and how people will move through the room," Jack said.

"It can be helpful to sketch a rough drawing of the space, mapping out where each furniture piece will go to ensure a cohesive and practical arrangement."

Jack's tips obviously worked because the judges thought they "nailed" their styling in their winning office and rumpus room which you can see below:

Jack shared some cardinal rules for planning the perfect layout:

• Consider the room's purpose and how you intend to use the space
• Ensure there's enough room for walkways
• If the room has a view you'd like to highlight, position the furniture to complement rather than obstruct it

While it can be scary for beginners, Jack encouraged home stylists to "be bold with design choices".

"Embrace patterns and layers to create a dynamic space. Layering not only adds depth but also brings visual interest, making the environment feel intentional and expertly styled," he added.

If you're too intimidated by strong patterns and colours, Jack advised to start small by incorporating interest artworks or decorative accessories.

"That way you can add a contemporary touch without committing to permanent changes, these are items you can easily replace in future."

Jack's favourite way to change a space with minimal input but maximal results is by using peel-and-stick wallpaper "for a fresh look without the commitment".
