AFL trade period, day 9: Kane Cornes labels Dan Houston deal 'disastrous' for Port Adelaide, confused by 'huge money' contract for Jack Lukosius

Port great Kane Cornes has taken to video form and run his eye over the Dan Houston trade.

"It's a disastrous deal for Port Adelaide," he said on X.

"You know the scene in Pulp Fiction? Where she says 'everybody be cool this is a robbery'. That's what's happened at Port Adelaide here.

"You've essentially traded a dual All-Australian, who you had under contract for three years on good money, favourable money for Port Adelaide, for pick 13 and 29. That's essentially what you've done.

"I know there's some steak knifes thrown in. Rory Atkins, can't work that one out. You've actually done Gold Coast a favour and taken his contract off their hands but you get no benefit. Same with Jack Lukosius. It says to me Port Adelaide are rebuilding but it's confusing because if you're rebuilding you want to finish down the bottom next year. Problem with that is you've given away your first pick for Jack Lukosius.

"If Port Adelaide finish bottom six, it could be a very good pick inside the top 10 and you've given him six years. Jack Lukosius is a player that needs to be playing on the edge and you've given him a six-year contract on huge money so I just don't get it."

He was an emergency for the Lions in the grand final.

Incase you missed it from earlier, there's still a long way to go for Jake Stringer's move to GWS.

Essendon list boss Matt Rosa told AFL Trade Radio earlier that any mooted move for Dylan Shiel to return to GWS was out of the picture but did shed light on the Stringer situation.

"We're continuing talks with Jake's management group, and we've picked up some discussions with GWS as well, they've shown some interest," he told AFL Trade Radio on Tuesday.

"We'll continue having those discussions over the next couple of days, but not too much has changed over the last few days.

"There's still a fair bit to play out. We'll continue to work through it, as we've stated with our position, Jake's a contracted player and played really good football for us this year.

"I spoke to Jason (GWS list boss Jason McCartney) yesterday and we'll continue to talk, but I can't really give too much further comment on that at this stage."

Yesterday, Kane Cornes asked if Port are "trading to try and win the SANFL premiership?" as part of the Houston deal.

Now that's been finalised, with the pick 50 detail now emerging, he's doubled down.

Liam Baker's homecoming wish has been granted by the West Coast Eagles.

Baker, who had nominated West Coast as his preferred landing spot in 2025, was one of two players involved in a three-way trade deal on Tuesday morning. 

Signing on a five-year deal, Baker will be joined by Carlton's Matt Owies.

The 26-year-old expressed his excitement to be working under new Eagles senior coach Andrew McQualter, who he says partially played a role in his move. 

"It definitely swayed me in that direction (to move) when his name was in the mix," Baker told Trade Radio.

"I made up my mind before he got announced but if he had been announced before that I would've been straight there."

Baker revealed he "felt distracted" by the urge to return home while competing with Richmond and was "relieved" to learn his wish would be coming true. 

"It was a really tough year mentally. I felt at times that I felt a bit distracted at times, he said.

"It did wear me down. I absolutely loved Richmond, it's just the circumstances of where it is in the country as to why I wanted to leave.

"(West Coast) got the job done at the end of the day now it's up to me to get over there and get stuck into it."

It took longer than many expected but Dan Houston has finally made his way to Collingwood.

The mega three-way trade deal sees five players enter the 2025 season in new colours.

Port Adelaide will get Jack Lukosius, Joe Richards and Rory Atkins in addition to picks 13, 29, 36 and 50.

Collingwood will receive All-Australian defender Dan Houston and pick 58.

The Pies have exchanged Joe Richards and pick 36 for Houston to Port Adelaide, while John Noble departs to the Suns.

The Suns also receive two 2025 first round picks courtesy of both clubs, with Port also handing over pick 39.

Three teams, five players, signed and sealed.
