Swans champion’s retirement confirms brutal premiership reality
Sydney Swans defender Dane Rampe has announced his retirement from the AFL on Friday, calling time after a 14-season career.
One of the most respected and decorated players in Swans history, Rampe retires after the 2026 preliminary final loss as his final game for the Sydney club, with four grand final appearances but no premiership to his name.

Rampe, who turns 37 next year, admitted he had “nothing left to give” after playing 289 games for the red and white, the seventh-most in the club’s history.
“The Sydney Swans felt like home long before I ever walked through the door, and to have not only played for this club, but to have led it, has been perhaps the greatest privilege of my life,” Rampe said.
“This has been an incredibly hard decision to make. I have given every part of my heart and soul to this place, and as much as I wish it were otherwise, I simply have nothing left to give.
“I share this not from a place of exhaustion or defeat, but from one of overwhelming pride and gratitude.
“I have been afforded far more from my career than I ever could have imagined.
“The experiences, the lessons and the growth that came from the incredible highs and devastating lows transcend football, and I will carry them with me for the rest of my life.
“I would not change a thing.”
The veteran bows out after co-captaining the squad from 2019 to 2023.
He also stepped in to replace an injured Callum Mills as captain in the 2026 finals series, after vice-captain Isaac Heeney was suspended.
He led the team through to the preliminary finals against Fremantle but fell agonisingly short.
It could have been a fairytale ending for Rampe, who played in four losing grand finals as a Swan in 2014, 2016, 2022 and 2024.

But instead, the veteran will retire with only individual accolades to his name, after he earned All-Australian honours in 2016 and won Sydney’s Bob Skilton Medal in 2019.
“Dane has been a great player and a great leader for our club. He retires having given 100 per cent of himself to the club and the game, on and off the field,” said Swans chairman Andrew Pridham.
“He is deeply respected as a person and an athlete. Through his journey he captained the club, earned a Bob Skilton Medal along with numerous other club awards and is a club life member.
“Dane was a key member in four grand final appearances, including in 2016, the season he earned All Australian selection.”
