Victoria Beckham's childhood

On April 17, 1974 Victoria Adams came into the world.

The future pop star was the first child born to parents Jackie and Anthony Adams.

Victoria grew up in Goffs Oak with her sister Louise and brother Christian, while their parents owned an electronics wholesale business.

"My dad worked really hard to have the money for us to have a nice house," she told Vogue in 2017.

In the 2023 docuseries Beckham, the pop star claimed her family was "very working class", though hilariously admitted her father drove her to school in a Rolls-Royce.

Before she became part of one of the biggest bands in history, Victoria grew up being told by her parents she "could achieve absolutely anything".

"My family brought me up telling me I could achieve absolutely anything," she told Vogue.

"Whenever I said I can't do it, my dad, he just wouldn't hear it."

In 1993, Victoria's life changed forever.

At around 19 years of age, the singer answered an advertisement for casting in the industry publication The Stage for an all-female band.

In 1994, along with Mel Brown, Mel Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams was cast in the Spice Girls, gaining the moniker 'Posh Spice'.

But the star reportedly almost missed out on being selected for the iconic girl group after she reportedly only scored five out of 10 for her singing.

Here, the girls are pictured in a 1994 clip posted to mark the 30th anniversary of their auditions.

"What started back in 1994 has turned into an amazing journey, way beyond anything we could have ever imagined," the group wrote in 2024.

The band's debut album reportedly sold a mammoth 23 million copies, including their bit Say You'll Be There.

In 2023, Victoria revisited the track by performing a karaoke cover with her husband David Beckham.

1997 marked the beginning of one of the most famous celebrity love stories of modern times.

After being catapulted to fame with the Spice Girls, Victoria decided to attend a football match with her bandmate Mel C.

What she didn't know is that she'd end up falling in love with one of the players on the field: David Beckham.

"I wasn't into football then, I'm not into football now. But I'd seen pictures of him in magazines, and he was obviously a very good-looking boy," Victoria confessed in the Beckham docuseries.

"The fact I went to the games really was just to kind of, some would say 'stalk' him."

Meanwhile, David also had seen the Spice Girls star, revealing in his docuseries years later he had joked he would marry "the posh one" after seeing the group perform on TV.

In a 2016 letter to British Vogue, Victoria wrote "love at first sight does exist" after that fateful first encounter with her future husband.

Around a month after confirming her engagement, Victoria joined her bandmates on their very first tour, called the Spiceworld tour.

The group played 97 shows across seven months in the US and Europe.

But just as they were reaching the peak of their fame, Gerri Halliwell revealed on the European leg she was leaving the band.

The tour was also a significant time for Victoria, who had become pregnant with her and David's first child, Brooklyn.

"He was so so happy, we both were," she said in the Beckham documentary after revealing she told the footballer they were expecting just before his 1998 World Cup match.

Later in the night, Victoria and David famously changed into matching purple outfits.

Even their son Brooklyn was draped in the bright colour for the occasion.

"I'm trying to think back to when I decided to wear a purple suit, and I don't know when that happened," David addressed the looks years later in his 2023 docuseries.

"I think I just took Victoria's lead on it, but what were we thinking?" he laughed.

"But it was fun, we weren't worried about what people were going to say. You just want to express yourself, that's just who we were," Victoria chimed in.
