Why the Ethan Klein cheating scandal should be a wake-up call for all of us

Opinion: YouTuber and podcaster Ethan Klein of H3 Productions has joined the list of internet-famous men who have allegedly cheated on their wives, only for it to spectacularly blow up in their face in a very public setting.

People cheating on their spouses, while despicable, is nothing new. Men and women have been straying from their marriages since the beginning of time – so why do these situations continue to rock us to our core?

The answer is simple: Social media. In the 2000s, if a famous actor cheated on his model wife, no one could say with any certainty what their marriage was really like behind closed doors.

However, now we are privy to celebrities’ lives and relationships in way’s we’ve never been before. We see every argument, every loving glance and every grand gesture through social media.

The unprecedented access we have to their lives gives us the false confidence to pick which men are the “good guys” and which are red flags based on their public interactions.

Fans of the H3 Podcast were convinced that Ethan Klein was a loving, doting husband who was obsessed with his wife Hila. The pair have been together for 20 years, and he would publicly slam other men accused of cheating on his show regularly.

He was also a staunch supporter and advocate of women’s rights. He has a tattoo of his wife’s face on his arm. Not only that, but he was publicly her biggest cheerleader.

That’s why these instances of alleged infidelity in celebrity relationships cut so deep. A marriage that millions of people idolised as the gold standard for over a decade wasn’t even real.

Everything we thought we knew about the “wife guy” is wrong. There’s really no way to tell the “good guys” from the bad anymore … and that is terrifying.

Now ex-wife Hila claimed the podcast host and father of their three children was having an “emotional affair” for six months.

“I am living a nightmare I can’t wake up from. My husband has been having an affair,” she alleged in a bombshell statement on Instagram.

“I have been fed lie after lie for months. I am tired of lies. Here’s the truth.”

She accused him of repeatedly lying and gaslighting her, explaining that she had a feeling something was off.

“I trusted him because I loved him. I stopped questioning him and started questioning myself, my own instincts. My sanity.”

“Eventually he was caught in a lie, and I knew I was done. But then the lies continued. ‘It was just a kiss’ became ‘it was emotional cheating.’ After I dragged these lies from him he finally admitted he’d been in an affair for over six months.”

She also confessed that she doesn’t know what the extent of the affair was, adding she probably will never know.

“The betrayal I feel is immeasurable. The person I loved and trusted for 20 years evaporated overnight… how do I even make sense of this?”

Ethan has confirmed he is working to cut ties financially and ownership-wise from his H3 Podcast following the cheating allegations.

“I am working with Hila to urgently remove my ownership and financial stakes in any podcasts, Teddy Fresh, Teddy Glow or any joint venture that I would profit from,” he wrote on his Instagram Story, referring to his wife’s fashion and beauty brands.

“All of your support will go directly to Hila and the crew. I do this in the hope that people can still support Hila and the crew without the concern of enriching me.

He concluded: “I know the crew will make an awesome show, they are packed to the brim with the most talented, creative, hilarious and all around great people.”

Fans have speculated that Ethan’s affair was with a younger employee however that has not been confirmed.

Either way, the situation feels eerily similar to The Try Guys cheating scandal that rocked the internet in 2022.

Ned Fulmer, known as ‘The Wife Guy’ in the YouTube quartet The Try Guys was exposed for having an affair with his younger co-worker.

Fulmer would write essays to his wife about how much he loved her on social media, only to be caught on camera kissing his employee in a nightclub.

If the public fallout of these relationships has taught me anything it’s this: NEVER compare your relationship to these public marriages.

You cannot believe everything you see online. A strong relationship is made up of more than just flexing expensive date nights and gifts on Instagram.

No matter how perfect a couple may seem, you never know what is going on behind closed doors. This is a good reminder of that.
