They're the three words you heard uttered countless times on tonight's episode of The Block – Shou Sugi Ban.

While we're still not exactly sure how to pronounce it, we did find out exactly what it is after Kylie and Brad named it the star of their dark and moody main ensuite.

Put in simplest terms, Shou Sugi Ban is a charred Japanese timber used for exterior cladding.

What is the method behind Shou Sugi Ban?

The term Shou Sugi Ban is also used to describe the centuries-old Japanese method of preserving wood by charring it with fire without combusting the whole piece.

The end result is a striking black carbon coating that is both aesthetic and helps protect the wood.

It might seem counterintuitive but charring the wood actually makes it stronger and more durable.

The carbon layer, which is coated with natural oil, provides a protective barrier against moisture making it ideal for external applications.

What is Shou Sugi Ban commonly used for?

Its durability makes Shou Sugi Ban excellent for external cladding of homes but there's no rules saying that's all it can be used for.

Take Kylie and Brad for instance, who love the dark aesthetic so much they're using it as a feature wall in their main ensuite.

And a bonus, it's easily self-installable!
