Exclusive: The Block host Scotty Cam opens up about life at home and his 'little known' rule for all homeowners

EXCLUSIVE: For The Block's Scott Cam, summer means trips to the beach and quality time with family.

The beloved host is dad to three adult children, twins Sarah and Billy, and older son Charlie, who make the most of their time with dad before he heads back to Melbourne to film The Block.

"We come down here every year, the same time," said Scotty, 62, as he spoke from the picturesque South Coast of NSW.

And when he's not mastering his annual roast pork come Christmas time, Scotty admits he's on the tools during the summer holidays – and he's urging every Aussie household to do the same.

On top of his fatherly duties, the TV host is a partner for Allianz this year, calling for Aussies to stay on top of their home maintenance to avoid costly mishaps down the line.

It's particularly true if you plan on leaving home for two or more weeks at a time, a personal rule all homeowners should be following.

Scotty even has his kids on board, who he admitted are always happy to help out at home.

"They're always very active like that and give us a hand," he smiled.

But the host admitted his kids "love it" when Scotty and his wife are away.

"Because they've got the house to themselves, so they chill out without me telling them what to do," he laughed.

As far as maintenance tips go, the experienced carpenter had plenty to share – a sample checklist of tasks before going on holidays.

"It's cleaning your gutters, making sure your downpipes aren't blocked, making sure the drains of your patio aren't blocked," Scotty advised.

"Check for vermin and put your traps out to make sure rats don't get in and chew your pipes or electrical lines.

"Check your flexi hoses under your sinks and vanities," he continued. "Those are just minor things you can do to prevent disaster when you come home."

"There's some little known facts about going on holidays," Scotty continued. "And that's the $19 million dollars in claims just from damaged flexi hoses alone."

The host said looking out for "drips, leaks and kinks" is a starting point. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, you might need to call a plumber.

"But don't get up a ladder too often if you're not capable," Scotty advised.

"That's the biggest enemy of the DIY-er, the ladder," he laughed.

When he's not filming The Block, Scotty enjoys fishing in his tinnie and spending time with his wife.

"She gets slightly annoyed at me following her around all the time," he joked.
