Episode 40 recap: A split-second decision steals the win at Room Reveals as one devastated team fail to finish

It's the final day of the final week inside the homes on Phillip Island – can you believe it?!

We are just one Room Reveal away from heading outdoors for landscaping, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves.

House 1's week has been difficult, to say the least. Maddy and Charlotte have a to-do list as long as their arms, including a lot of their own installation.

Across site, Mimi can sympathise. House 5 have had no tiler this week, so she's assisting their builder Dan in cutting tiles to install themselves.

Meanwhile, Foreman Dan heads off-site for a more relaxing coffee experience. However, his peace is quickly interrupted by a call from Grant. Then a call from Kristian. And then a call from a very scantily clad Brad!

What can we say? He's a very in-demand man!

Kylie, Courtney and Mimi head out for some last minute shopping – and their trip is hijacked by Charlie, oops, we mean Shelley, who calls with a mission for her 'angels'.

It's a fairly easy mission: to have fun. To make Shell proud, they grab lunch and Pina Coladas. Who can blame them? Besides their partners who are busy holding down the fort on site, that is.

At 5pm on Saturday, Foreman Dan prepares to leave the site – which means all the trades have to go home too.

Maddy and Charlotte didn't realise tradies would have to leave so early today. Their stress levels are so high it manifests in Maddy nervously singing their to-do list.

"I got death stares from the girls," Dan says.

They're not the only ones with an all-nighter ahead of them, but Ricky and Haydn have all but finished their rooms early so they head to the pub for some quality time with builder Duncan.

The next morning, Scotty arrives for tools down and although it's a valiant effort, House 1 do not complete their rooms.

Before we find out how much they'll be punished by the judges for that, the Blockheads find out some very good news ahead of landscaping weeks: Freedom are giving them all a $10,000 voucher AND $10,000 cash. Score!

Let's find out who the judges are going to award another $10k, shall we?

Maddy and Charlotte

The girls have had a "frustrating" week. Everything that could go wrong seemed to, but in the end they spent $36,043 on their spaces and were very happy with how their elevated bunk in the bedroom turned out.

The judges discover an issue before they're fully in the bedroom, though, as they nearly hit their heads on the shelf above the room's kitchenette.

Shaynna is disappointed by the room's design.

"I wouldn't rent this out as a couple because I'm looking at a cupboard. I've come here to Phillip Island to feel a getaway, and this doesn't feel like a getaway.

"And if I'm coming here with two kids, I don't want them sitting above me."

Marty thinks it's functional but lacking "magic".

Darren, however, disagrees with them both and praises the craftsmanship of the bunk and the addition of the kitchenette.

"What part of the market is this not hitting?" he says.

"What I'm saying is they are trying to cover too many markets," Shaynna replies. "I don't feel this does it well enough."

But the girls have a stubborn supporter in Darren, who says he would give the room a 10 if it was finished and tidy.

The judges are heated today! They take a deep breath and head to the laundry, which is also unfinished.

Marty doesn't think it's functional for a house that can fit 10 people, with a major lack of storage, and Shaynna questions the use of a glass door right next to the additional toilet.

"Marty noted you got a 10 last week and this week, you've fallen off a cliff," Scotty reads off his notes. A tough end to a tough week for House 1!

Courtney and Grant

Grant describes his and Courtney's week as "rocky". They pivoted the plan for their mezzanine bedroom to make a second main suite after suggestions from the judges, pulling it together along with their laundry for $24,362.

"Ah, they've listened! How good is this?" Marty exclaims as they enter last week's rumpus, which has newly installed wardrobes from Kinsman. Great start!

The good times keep rolling in the bedroom – and the judges even change their minds about the guest ensuite they judged so harshly in Week 7.

"They're now calling it a day spa," Scotty says.

Shaynna suggests that adding a coffee machine and bar fridge to the office will bring the whole mezzanine space together.

Darren praises the colour palette and Marty thinks the "simply superb" space will excite many buyers, and states this is now the main suite he would opt to stay in at this house.

Shaynna gives Courtney major props for her art choices.

"The eye for detail for Courtney, bellissima," she says with chef's kiss.

She predicts House 2's unique 'Moderterranean' style will set trends right across Australia, just like Steph and Gian's 'Japandi' style did last year. It's such high praise it brings a tear to Courtney's eye!

There is more room for improvement in the laundry.

Darren suggests pulling their appliances forward to avoid people hitting their heads on the angled wall above them.

Marty questions the decision to omit a toilet, which means people will have to walk through the whole house to get to one from the pool.

But their finishes and styling are "consistent and beautiful", Shaynna says.

Ricky and Haydn

Ricky and Haydn's plan for the week was beds, beds, beds. As many beds as they could fit in their mezzanine kids' room, without making it too cramped. Oh, and a laundry with 'zhoosh'. They're very happy with their work, which cost them $30,544.

The boys' bunk bed, with an extra pull out mattress, receives immediate praise from Marty, who notes House 3 can now sleep a whopping 12 people.

Shaynna thinks the pink, coastal Grafico wallpaper is "stunning" and praises their wardrobes.

"This is the last week internally on The Block and the boys have finally hit their stride," Darren says with a laugh.

He thinks it is a well-planned, well-executed space with a great colour palette, perfect lighting and attention to detail.

Shaynna thinks the 'fun house' screams "perfect holiday home for families" and Marty agrees it is the space where kids will be immediately drawn to, but he suggests adding a ceiling fan.

"When this goes online, it will be that one property that feels relaxing, that is knockabout, that kids will look at and go 'mum, dad, I need to have that space'. Having that emotional connection's so important."

"Talk about ending with a bang," Shaynna says.

The praise keeps rolling in the laundry, which gets the judges very excited about a room that's, well, not typically exciting.

It's both functional and beautiful, with a powder room too.

Shaynna can see how the additional bench space and sink will be used for an overflow of platters (and beers in the sink) during entertaining.

"This is a buyer's dream" she concludes.

Kylie and Brad

Kylie and Brad have ended the week "really happy" with the final results of their black and white guest bedroom and huge laundry space, which cost them $26,260.

At first, the judges are astounded by the echoey acoustics of the room, thanks to its very high ceiling.

They are much more positive about the styling, with Darren praising the bed and Shaynna loving the striped wallpaper, lighting and other styling details.

However, they think the layout could be improved.

Darren thinks they need a bigger wardrobe space, wondering "where do you put your undies?" Asking the important questions, as always!

For Marty, it's missing the warm, Tom Ford vibes of their downstairs rooms, which he thinks tells him Kylie and Brad aren't listening to the judges comments.

"This mezzanine has no idea what it is," Shaynna responds. "Coming up here from downstairs, people will go 'oh'."

"Why do we even bother?" Kylie mutters back at HQ.

Back downstairs, Shaynna thinks the black cupboard doors hiding away their washing machine and dryer are "horrible" and she would take them off.

She even sighs when she sees the black and white pegs, calling it a waste of time.

Marty wonders why they returned to monochrome after winning rooms with a different colour palette, saying their "obsession with the black and white has to end".

"Let's hope we don't see a chessboard outside," Shaynna jokes.

Kylie and Brad are frustrated by the feedback yet again: "I have nothing to say to the judges," Kylie reflects.

Kristian and Mimi

This week, Kristian and Mimi finished everything in both their rooms – a great turnaround after falling short last week! They spent $34,160 on rooms they are hoping can give them their first win a while.

It's not off to the best start, as Darren immediately clocks that the door latch has been put on backwards.

Oh, and the judges all realise House 5 hasn't listened to a word they said last week about switching this space back to the rumpus, per the original floor plan.

"I guess we can call it now. It is an error, it's definitely a mistake," Darren says.

As a bedroom, Shaynna thinks it's a nice one: "You cannot fault the look and feel of this room." But she thinks having no ensuite, with the bathroom attached to their rumpus instead, is an impractical choice.

All of these changes and choices make Marty label the house "a hard sell". Ouch.

They are much nicer about the laundry, which includes "sexy" green appliances.

It ticks all the boxes.

"This is probably the laundry of the day," Darren says.

And just like that, the interiors of the houses are done! Who gets the win in the final indoor Room Reveal?

House 2 and House 3 are neck-and-neck with Darren and Marty's scores delivered, which gives Courtney and Grant the perfect chance to use their Bonus Point Penguin.

And it pays off, securing them the win! The final scores are:

Maddy and Charlotte: 20
Courtney and Grant: 29.5
Ricky and Haydn: 29
Kylie and Brad: 22.5
Kristian and Mimi: 20.5

Yep, without the penguin the boys would've had their second win. "Phil got us, I'm spewin'," Ricky reacts. On the bright side, they get a perfect 10 from Shaynna which secures them an extra $10k anyway.
