Dancer Emma compared Back Of House Week to doing the worm: "It's a lot of up and down but when you get to the end everyone cheers.

We bet she and husband Ben are cheering after finishing their laundry, pantry, powder room and mud room.

House 1 was one of the few teams to stick to the architect's original plan and not alter the layout of the back of house rooms.

Would that be a decision that would pay off or back fire?

Stepping into the laundry the judges immediately clocked the elevated washer and dryer.

Oh and did we mention the pull out drawers to rest your laundry baskets on?

Say goodbye to bending over in order to do the washing.

It's safe to say it was a hit with the judges, with the trio labelling it a "genius" move.

"This is something that I'm definitely going to be taking home and replicating in my place," Marty said.

From a design point of view, Darren was loving the toasted chestnut cabinetry.

"It's such a lovely, considered colour palette."

Darren also appreciated that Emma and Ben had designated their hanging space to an area adjacent to a window where you get natural light and clothes could actually dry.

"It's such a good sensible use of a dead corner. This has been planned really beautifully."

At this point Shaynna was trying to wrap her head around the functionality of the pantry-meets-laundry space.

Looking at the pantry shelves, she clocked containers for tea and coffee but noticed they were "miles away" from the fridge in the kitchen where you'd need to go to get milk.

"It just doesn't work," Shaynna shook her head.

Unfortunately for Emma and Ben they didn't score any more functionality points for their pantry bench.

"There's so much room for prep here that they could've put a kettle or a coffee machine on."

Instead Emma and Ben had included two sinks that the judges couldn't see a use for.

Not only did Shaynna think the space didn't work as a butler's pantry, but she also felt it made the laundry operations "awkward".

"Folding is almost unworkable," she said.

Marty agreed with Shaynna: "The reason you have a butler's pantry is to have a second kitchen area, a place you can make a bit of a mess.

"There's not a lot of room allocated in this space to make that mess."

While the natural light was beautiful and the material selections were stunning, Emma and Ben missed the mark as far as planning was concerned.

The judges declared it "a waste of square meterage" and a "no man's land".
