With two perfect 10s, Courtney and Grant earned themselves gloating rights and $30,000 as they won Backyard Week – and it seems you can recreate their success.

The plans for their winning backyard all started with a consult with Freedom interior designer Jack.

Despite Courtney's initial hopes for a "grand Italian palace", Jack advised that sometimes paring things back can make the most impact.

While fans of The Block simply adored Courtney and Grant's backyard they had one very important question and took to social media to ask it.

"Won't all the furniture get ruined in the rain?" they wrote online.

While many items were out in the rain for the purposes of judging, that query brings us to our very first piece of styling advice – select weather-resistant and durable materials.

Hardwoods such as teak will stand up very well to the elements and are naturally resistant to water, rot and insects.

Woods can be more costly upfront, but it's all about investing wisely. It's better to purchase new pieces every decade rather than every year.

Aluminum and rattan are other options for outdoor furniture, while they are vastly different in appearance both are lightweight, easy to move around and hold up to the weather.

It's not just the material of your furniture you need to think about but the versatility of the pieces, too.

Benches and side tables are two items that can be multipurpose for seating, dining or displaying items.

One of the most important things to do when designing your backyard is to think about how you will actually use it.

If you have a young family it's likely you'll need more grass and play areas over fancy dining sets but if you're an avid cook then more outdoor kitchen amenities should be the go!
