Forget the Gold Coast and Noosa, this is your new coastal reset destination for winter

If you're looking for a reset from your everyday life, the ultimate holiday destination might be closer than you think.

As someone who grew up in South East Queensland and frequently visited the beaches of Noosa and the Gold Coast, I am embarrassed to admit I hadn't heard of Shoalhaven before moving to Sydney.

But this gem of a location tucked away down the South Coast of NSW left me absolutely speechless.

Think crisp mornings, cozy wineries, delectable dishes, and immaculate coastal views.

So it's no wonder I jumped at the opportunity to head off on a mother-daughter road trip to experience the region's "Wine, Whales and Foodie Trails" offerings in Mollymook, Ulladulla, Jervis Bay, Kioloa, and more.

Here's your ultimate first-timer's guide to exploring everything Shoalhaven has to offer.

Shoalhaven Accommodation

Motel Molly

As I drove into Motel Molly on a sunny Friday afternoon, I quickly realised this is one of the chicest and most fabulous motels I have ever stayed in.

From the aesthetic Moroccan-inspired pink decor to the friendly service and stunning beachside location, this did not feel like your regular motel.

Motel Molly instantly transports you into holiday mode from the moment you check in.

The accommodation was decked out with a sun-drenched pool and spa deck, complimentary bike and surfboard hire, cute mini fridges stocked with fun beverages, and a range of activities.

During our stay, we noticed many couples enjoying a romantic getaway; however, with two spacious, comfortable twin beds in our room, it was the perfect option for a girls' trip. Our room was also only a few minutes' walk from the pristine Mollymook Beach.

Things to do in Shoalhaven

Wine Tasting at Cupitt's Estate

I would recommend a wine tasting at Cupitt's Estate to every wine lover visiting the South Coast.

My mum and I arrived at golden hour to sample all of the delicious wines and bask in the incredible sunset. After sampling six different wines each, identifying their unique tasting notes, and learning about their ideal food pairings, I was excited to learn even more about wine.

If you have the time, I suggest staying longer for the beautiful and social dining options available that overlook the winery's scenic landscape.

Jervis Bay Boat Cruise

If you want an up close look at the white sand beaches and incredible marine life Jervis Bay has to offer, look no further than Jervis Bay Wild.

There are many different activities and tours available, including the Passage Cruise, which allows you to witness the coastlines' coves and cliffs, and immerse yourself in the crystal clear turquoise waters.

We were lucky enough to get an up-close look at an angelic pod of dolphins that were eager to show off for us.

Unfortunately, we were a few weeks short of the annual humpback whale migration, which allows you to spot these majestic creatures from May to November.

I would love to come back during Whale Season.

Murramarang National Park

For those looking to reconnect with nature, you can't miss the Murramarang National Park. This National Park is filled with mesmerising sights, a dramatic coastline that reminded me of Hawaii, and is abundant with Eastern Grey Kangaroos.

We drove to Pretty Beach and parked near the campground before heading on a few of the surrounding trails. On the trails and beaches, we were able to get extremely close to many beautiful and tame kangaroos while still maintaining a respectful distance from the wildlife. After a few hours of walking, we watched the sunset at Pretty Beach before leaving for a nearby dinner.

Where to eat in Shoalhaven

Merry St Restaurant

If you are already in the area and looking for a little bit of luxury after your day spent outdoors, look no further than Merry St Restaurant.

Tucked away in the small coastal town of Kioloa, you will find this bustling restaurant with an incredible menu to share. We indulged in pork belly skewers, beef short rib, roasted beef fat potatoes, and roasted fig pavlova with whipped ricotta.

Salt and Spencer and Five Little Pigs

Just a few minutes' walk from Motel Molly, you will find the most down-to-earth breakfast spot that will make you feel like a local as you watch the sun rise over Mollymook Beach.

Salt & Spencer is connected to the Mollymook Golf Club and couldn't be in a better location. With incredible views, great coffee, and a menu packed with all the classics, it was the perfect place to ease into the day.

You can also grab breakfast at 5 Little Pigs for a filling pancake stack and the best iced latte I have ever had.

Harbour House Ulladulla

From the outside, I wasn't initially sure what to expect from Harbour House Ulladulla, but that didn't stop me from leaving lunch feeling very impressed.

This quaint restaurant within a historic building offers a delicious menu for sharing with your friends, family, and loved ones. Along with warm and welcoming service, the tiny details of the restaurant take you back in time with vintage plates hung on the walls, unique artwork, and eclectically curated rooms.

Here we shared the fresh Salt & Pepper Squid, Mushroom Risotto, and finished off with a Roasted Hazelnut Chocolate Mousse.

Rick Stein at Bannisters

I had high expectations for Rick Stein at Bannisters, as after all, it is a Rick Stein restaurant.

As soon as we entered, my mum and I were greeted by the accommodating waitstaff. Feeling like valued guests, we ordered drinks and admired the surroundings before dusk turned to nightfall.

For dinner, I ordered a succulent Grilled Ulladulla Snapper with Hollandaise, and finished the night sharing a light and sweet Crème Brûlée and Chocolate and Pistachio Soufflé.

As one of Mollymook's biggest highlights, Rick Stein at Bannisters is the definitive restaurant to dine in for seafood lovers and special occasions.

It would have also been lovely to enjoy a little more sunlight at the venue, so I suggest heading to The Pool Bar for pre-dinner drinks before your booking.

The verdict

Shoalhaven in the cooler months is the ideal place to explore. Wine, Whales, and Foodie Trails with your loved ones. I can't wait to go back and experience the height of the whale migration and uncover even more hidden gems in this incredible region.

Just a short drive from Sydney, the South Coast of NSW provides a quintessential weekend getaway for those craving a reset.
