Solo travel is a booming industry worth billions of dollars, and it’s only getting bigger. But some people might still be nervous about exploring the big wide world on their own.

As a seasoned solo traveller Sami Lukis has shared some advice for those thinking about taking that leap.

Sami, who also hosts group tours that often include people travelling alone, said the one most common things people are nervous about is going to a restaurant or bar on their own.

“One of the scariest things about travelling alone for some people is the prospect of dining alone,” Sami tells nine.com.au.

“But that never bothers me because I actually use that time as a valuable opportunity to do some admin, budgeting, planning for the next day. I can always stay busy sorting through the hundreds of photos I’ve taken and sharing content and happy snaps on my socials.”

If this isn’t you though, Sami has one simple tip for helping ease the awkwardness.

“Chat to the staff,” she said. “You can get some great local tips about the city you’re in.”

“If you can’t bear the thought of eating alone, think about joining a local evening food tour or cooking class. That way you’ll still get the food experience, but you won’t be alone.”

Choosing where you sit can also make a difference.

“I always ask for a window seat, where I can indulge in my favourite sport: people watching,” Sami said. “Or I grab a seat at the bar. It’s not as intimidating as sitting alone, in the middle of a big open room.”

Speaking on Today Extra this week, Sami said there are so many ways you can travel solo these days there is something for everyone.

Whether you’re doing it completely on your own, joining a group tour like hers, or jumping on a cruise.

“Freedom is the big [benefit]. You can choose where you want to go, when you want to go, who you want to go with. Set your own itinerary,” Sami said.

One of the biggest considerations though is the cost.

“Financially there are some pros and cons,” she said. “When you’re travelling on your own, particularly with hotels it can be a little more expensive when you’re not splitting the cost with someone else.”

“But on the upside you get to set your own budget and you don’t have to compromise financially.”
