The world's best beach has been crowned - and it's not far from home

It should almost be impossible to choose the world's best beach - there are so many good ones out there, from the tourist-friendly Bondi Beach to the rugged, isolated islands in the South Pacific.
But someone has to do it. The 2026 list of The World's 50 Best Beaches has been released, compiled by a list of over 1000 expert travel professionals.
The beaches are judged on criteria including the water calmness, their 'untouched' quality, weather, local wildlife, and more.
Read through to see which two Aussie beaches made it in to the top 20 - and they're both in the same state.
20. Canto de la Playa, Dominican Republic
This remote beach is loved for its "wild" feel, with plenty of coconut trees lining the shore.
There are also shallow natural pools filled with starfish to explore.
19. Saadiyat Beach, United Arab Emirates
This Abu Dhabi beach is a nesting ground for Hawksbill turtles.
It has luxury resort vibes but also strict environmental protections for the wildlife.
18. Cala Gabbiani, Italy
Located on the island of Sardinia, this beach - which translates to "Gulls' Cove" - has emerald waters and smooth white pebbles.
It is accessible only by boat or trek.
17. Grace Bay Beach, Turks and Cacos
Frequently appearing on 'best beaches' global lists, Grace Bay is celebrated for its lack of rocks, seaweed, or pollution.
The massive barrier reef offshore protects the beach from large waves, keeping the water calm and perfect for swimming.
16. PK 9, French Polynesia
Found on the atoll of Fakarava, this beach is the ultimate deserted island destination.
It is a pristine strip of sand lined with coconut palms, bordering a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its incredible underwater biodiversity.
15. Turquoise Bay, Australia
Located in the Cape Range National Park of WA, this beach is famous for "drift snorkelling."
The current gently carries swimmers over the Ningaloo Reef, where you can see hundreds of species of fish and coral just meters from the shore.
14. Princess Diana Beach, Barbuda
Named in honour of the late Princess who loved this beach, it is remarkably quiet and undeveloped, perfect for a private getaway.
13. One Foot Beach, Cook Islands
Situated within the Aitutaki Lagoon, this tiny islet has some of the best lagoon views in the world.
It's a remote escape where the water is incredibly shallow and blue.
12. Cala Macarella, Spain
Located on the island of Menorca, this cove is postcard-perfect Mediterranean beauty.
Surrounded by pine trees and rugged cliffs, its water is so clear that boats often appear as if they are floating in mid-air.
