Australian Grand Prix RECAP: Oscar Piastri tops Friday practice as Lewis Hamilton swerves to avoid monster crash

That wraps up our coverage of Friday at the Australian Grand Prix.

There will be one more practice session for F1 on Saturday morning, before qualifying in the evening.

There will also be sprint races for the F2 and F3 series', as well as another race each for the Supercars and Carrera Cup.

Brodie Kostecki is two from two in the Supercars after taking victory on Friday evening.

He made the decisive move on Matt Payne early in the race and was never headed.

Big congratulations to the Walkinshaw team - they've taken their first podium of their Supra era with Ryan Wood crossing the line third.

Chaos in Melbourne!

Broc Feeney sent one down the inside of Aaron Cameron at the second last corner, but locked the rears and just about bumped him into the grass.

Feeney got off the throttle to allow Cameron back in front. Cameron, clearly unhappy with Feeney's move, bumped him on the way past. Kai Allen, sensing a moment to pick up two freebies, dived down the inside at the final corner, but Cameron clearly didn't see him, turned down, and both spun into the outside wall.

It's the third race in a row Cameron has been dumped out of a strong position.

The Blanchard Racing Team has had some shocking luck this weekend. They've had the car speed, but they just keep finding themselves involved in incidents.

Brodie Kostecki has taken the lead with a lovely move down the inside of Matt Payne at turn 12.

We were twice shown - by Will Brown on Cooper Murray and then Broc Feeney on Chaz Mostert - how not to get moves done at turn 12, so it was nice to see a nice clean move.

Feeney was the second Red Bull car to send one down the inside at 12. There was contact with Mostert, which appears to have damaged the Supra's steering.

Matt Payne won the start, and is still holding it as we work lap three.

Down the back of the pack, there was contact between Zach Bates and Macauley Jones at turn three, which sent them both spinning and right to the back of the pack.

Two laps later, Will Brown made a massive dive down the inside of Cooper Murray, but locked the rear brakes and hip-and-shouldered the Erebus Camaro into the gravel and to the back of the back.

He's since been slapped with a 15-second time penalty for his troubles.

F1 action might be done for the day, but the track now gets handed over to the Supercars for their second race of the weekend.

Brodie Kostecki has been fighting a stomach bug all weekend - he actually vomited inside his helmet on his way to taking pole position for yesterday's race, and then did a great job to claim victory.

Matt Payne, who took the championship lead for the first time in his career last light will start this race from pole.

We're about five minutes away from the race start.

Yeww! Oscar Piastri has shaken off the dodgy start to opening practice to set the quickest time in second practice.

His 1:19.729 set with about 20 minutes left in the session was quick enough to stand the test as drivers settled into race runs at the back end of the session.

Wow! Max Verstappen just once again proved he is the benchmark when he comes to car control.

At the ultra-fast left-right chicane over the back of the circuit, Verstappen suffered a massive snap of oversteer which sent him into the gravel on the exit of the corner.

As the car bounced around, shedding bits of carbon fibre and bodywork, he somehow managed to keep all four wheels pointing in the same direction.

Good signs here for McLaren and Oscar Piastri - the Aussie has just gone quickest with about 20 minutes left in this session.

Given this is the time of day qualifying will be run tomorrow, expect teams to attempt some qualifying simulations before the chequered flag flies.
