See you tomorrow!

That’s a wrap from today’s World Cup action.

The Socceroos fell to a shock 2-0 defeat against the USA and also in Group D, Turkiye was eliminated by Paraguay in a 1-0 loss.

We will be back tomorrow morning from 5am AEST, starting with a recap on the Netherlands versus Sweden game and live blogging Germany versus the Ivory Coast.

Thanks for joining us and see you then!

We're set for a showdown in Santa Clara

Both Australia and Paraguay have one win and one loss each in Group D.

This sets up a showdown for who will finish second in the group, as Türkiye is now eliminated and the United States have won the group.

Türkiye denied equalising chance as Paraguay clinch victory

Sophie Wisely

Absolute heartbreak for Türkiye as the final whistle blows and they are eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.

The team was unable to find an equalising chance against Paraguay and will not continue to the Round of 32.

Türkiye on brink of elimination

If Türkiye don’t find an equalising opportunity here in Santa Clara, they’ll be going home. After their defeat to the United States, a loss to Paraguay will be sending Türkiye home packing, with one game still to go.

They’ll need a last-gasp miracle to score a goal. They have seven minutes of additional time to find it.

Tempers flaring as Paraguay handed free kick

For a game with only a solitary goal, the temperatures are rising in the game.

Türkiye’s head coach Vincenzo Montella was booked for his protests on the sideline.

Referee Ivan Barton has been steadfast in his decisions in the chaos of this game between Paraguay and Türkiye. Quite the job!

He decided to just ignore Orlando Gill going down after taking his goal kick in the 80th minute, the threat of having to stay off for a minute has quickly gotten the Paraguay player up on his feet.

Türkiye dominating chances in second half

Sophie Wisely

Türkiye is desperate for an equalising opportunity, they’ve come out of the gates in the second half red-hot.

But no shots have made their way into the back of the net, even with a numerical advantage for Turkiye in San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

It’s still 1-0 to Paraguay in this Group D match.

This red card is great news for the Socceroos

In further ramifications for Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron’s misstep, the player will now miss the Socceroos vs Paraguay game on June 26.

This is the first time any player has been handed a red card for covering their face during a confrontation.

Players were reasonably warned before the tournament, so Almiron has no excuses.

FIFA and IFAB were the decision makers of this rule, in their aim to stamp out derogatory language or any homophobic slurs being used on the field between players.

Decision is red card! Disbelief for Paraguay

Sophie Wisely

A player covering their mouth with their hand or shirt in a confrontation situation can be sent off with a red card, and we’ve seen that happen in this game between Paraguay and Türkiye.

Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón covered his mouth while saying something to a Türkiye player, that was flagged by the group and the VAR has decided that it constitutes a red card.

Almirón is sent off for the incident, a new rule for this 2026 World Cup. This is the first time this rule has ever been implemented and Paraguay is now down to 10 players.

Türkiye desperately searching for equalising opportunity

Sophie Wisely

This feels like a very fast and chaotic game.

Türkiye is desperately looking for an equalising opportunity, with 78 per cent possession but that could be in part to Paraguay scoring so early in the match at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

This looks like a replay of Turkey’s second half against Australia, as the team desperately try to unlock the game.

Maybe this hydration break will allow them to capitalise on their momentum.

Fastest goal of the tournament for Paraguay!

Sophie Wisely

It took 64 seconds for Paraguay to lead in San Francisco!

A goal from Matías Galarza put the team ahead of Türkiye in quick succession. What a start.

That is the quickest goal scores of the 2026 World Cup so far and this will make Socceroos fans pay a little more attention to this game. We’ve also already had a yellow card handed to Galarza as well.

Paraguay and Türkiye seem to be speed running this game.
