WATCH: Ackerman stump mic incident
Proteas go ahead
South Africa leads by just one run with a lot happening in the middle.
There’s a bit of chat out there and Nathan Lyon has the ball turning.
Now Pat Cummins is into the attack.
What did Head and Marnus say to each other?
Travis Head went to check on Ackerman after he was being hit in the head.
Originally, it looked like he might have been telling him he missed the review but he was just checking on him.
You can hear Marnus Labuschagne wasn’t as sympathetic through the stump mic.
“See ya buddy. Heady what are you doing mate, he’s off?,” Labuschagne could be heard saying.
“He’s just checking,” someone could be heard saying before Head said “it’s all right”.
Ackerman’s attempt at a review
The moment Marques Ackerman reviewed was when the clock just hit 0 as shown below.

In the end, it saved South Africa a review, as Natalie Germanos pointed out on SuperSport.
You could understand Ackerman’s confusion though after being smacked on the helmet.
The Australians are celebrating and there’s controversy
Marques Ackerman is gone!
The opener tried to guide a bouncer over the keeper but instead edged the ball into his helmet, and it fell to slip.

Ackerman went down to Temba Bavuma and tried to review but as Marnus Labuschagne yelled out, the time was up.
“It’s touch and go,” Natalie Germanos said of the timing of his review.
“A little bit of controversy.”
Travis Head went over to check on his welfare after being hit in the helmet before Ackerman started walking off.
Ackerman is gone for 62 and South Africa is three wickets down.
Ackerman moves to 50
Marques Ackerman makes it two half centuries for the Test.
It’s barely been chanceless though. He almost hit a catch on 49 as Nathan Lyon tried to lull him into a false sense of security.
But anyway he’s there now and South Africa is 2-80.
Cummins goes in search of a wicket
Pat Cummins is on a wicket drought and now he has struck Temba Bavuma on the pads.
The umpire says not out due to height but Cummins reviews.
It looks high but let’s see what ball tracking says.
The wickets is missing and Cummins loses a review. The Aussies have two left.

We’re back
The third session has begun with a maiden to Nathan Lyon.
Proteas survive another close shave!
South Africa is panicking!
Marques Ackerman hit a shot to Cooper Connolly and shot off straight away.
He was sent back by Temba Bavuma as Connolly lined up the throw.
Connolly just missed but had more than enough time to line it up and probably should’ve taken a second.
“There wasn’t anything good about that single,” Graeme Smith said on SuperSport.
And now the session is done and it’s tea.

Big appeal from Australia
“Humongous shout,” Pommie Mbangwa described it.
That’s because Ackerman has been struck on the pads and Nathan Lyon was convinced it’s out.
The umpire gave it not out and Australia reviewed.
Ball tracking’s replay shows the umpire’s decision was genius, with the ball impacting outside the line.
Ackerman survives.
