'No way': Jack Riewoldt pours ice on shock Joe Daniher retirement rumours

Former Richmond gun Jack Riewoldt has shot down reports enigmatic Lions star Joe Daniher could retire if his side win the AFL grand final.

Although still contracted to the Lions until the end of 2025, reports emerged on Friday night Daniher was considering his future in the sport, and a Lions victory could bring about an immediate retirement.

A three-time premiership winner, Riewoldt said a Daniher retirement following a Lions loss wouldn't necessarily come as a surprise, there's no chance if they win.

He also suggested the 30-year-old might be unhappy with how the news has leaked, and that it would've been more his style to release a statement in a month's time without any fanfare.

"He lives in Byron Bay, he's in the shadows and stays away a bit, but you don't want it to leak on grand final week – you want every focus on the grand final," Riewoldt said on Fox Footy's grand final day coverage.

"If the Lions win today, and you get a taste of success, there is no way you're retiring at the top of the mountain.

"And there is no way the Lions are falling off the cliff any time soon. They've got a superstar team in all aspects, and once you win one, your mind goes straight to winning two."

Lions chief executive Greg Swann told SEN if the star forward does plan to retire, he hasn't told the club.

"He hasn't said anything to us, Joe, but you never know with Joe," Swann said.

"No one has said anything to us."

Former Hawk Ben Dixon said the reports would also be "a little distraction" for Daniher's preparation.

"Grand final week, you build it up … Joe is a very private person, if he was asked in a press conference, he might've said he was considering it," he said.

"So for that to leak, that's a little distraction."
