Major British retailer delivers devastating blow to Aussie fans

Marks & Spencer Food has delivered a devastating blow to Aussie fans after a tremendously successful product launch in local supermarkets this week.

M&S confirmed it won't be opening a physical store Down Under any time soon.

A spokesperson told nine.com.au: "We don't currently have any plans for a physical store or food website in Australia."

This comes after the successful launch of a range of M&S Food in Coles supermarkets across the country from November 19.

It includes popular Percy Pigs and Colin the Caterpillar confectionery, which sold a combined 47,000 packets on the first day of release, an unprecedented result for a new lolly launch at the supermarket giant.

The M&S Food collaboration with Coles is part of the supermarket's permanent product offering and includes the full Percy Pigs and Colin the Caterpillar confectionery range, as well as Scottish Shortbread varieties and Luxury Gold Tea Bags.

Also on sale at Coles from this week is the M&S Food viral sensation The Original Very Moreish Munch Tin, which is set to sell over a million tins in the UK in the lead up to Christmas.

Still, there was a glimmer of hope for Aussie M&S Food fans, with the spokesperson also telling nine.com.au that "depending on the success of our food products being sold in Coles stores, this is something we may consider for future plans".

Judging by the success of the drop in Coles this week, any physical store or website is sure to a huge success.

Marks & Spencer Food is one of Britain's most loved food and grocery retailers, frequented by royals including the late Queen Elizabeth, the Princess of Wales as well as Princess Beatrice.

British food fans have been thrilled to be able to buy M&S products in Coles supermarkets. Previously, these items were only available via online retailers like Britsuperstore or British Corner Shop, or Amazon and eBay, although the latter are not official channels.

Coles told nine.com.au after multiple store sold out of Percy Pigs on November 19: "The launch of Marks & Spencer Food has been an absolute hit down under.

"We've had an overwhelming response from our customers eager to get their hands on iconic British favourites Percy Pig and Colin the Caterpillar.

"The buzz in store and online has been incredible – Australians and Brits alike are embracing these beloved treats, which bring a touch of the UK to Aussie shelves.

"Our team is working hard to bring more Percy and Colin treats to our shelves, so customers can expect to see more stock arriving in the coming days."
