UK supermarket M&S Food are bringing lamingtons to the masses across Britain.

The grocery arm of Marks and Spencer launched the Australian dessert in stores this week - in a British high-street first - dubbing them the "chocolatey wonder from down under".

"Lamingtons are definitely the most iconic cake from down under and it's very exciting to be the first to bring our version of this beloved Aussie classic to the UK high street," Alice Birch, product developer for M&S Food bakery treats said in a statement.

There are two types on offer - the "chocolate & coconut" (aka classic) and the "caramelised biscuit" lamington, which has a more salted caramel flavour profile.

They're retailing for £4 ($8.29) for a packet of two - a tad pricier than the $3.80 lamington fingers in Coles and Woolworths back home.

But, Birch promises they're worth it, with premium products used to make the indulgent treats, which have been baked in the UK.

"Ours are extra special – they're hand finished with toppings and super indulgent thanks to the rich chocolate sponge and chocolate sauce coating.

"We've also got a trendy caramelised biscuit variant that we're confident shoppers will be going wild for on social media."

The reason M&S Food believe the "trendy" flavour, which features a rich chocolate sponge rolled in caramelised biscuit crumb and finished with hand-piped buttercream and salted caramel sauce, will be a hit is because they've seen it before - in Australia.

"Fun fact: when Woolworths in Australia launched this flavour last month, it instantly went viral on social media – now it's your turn, UK!," they told customers.

Similar to the Pavlova, both New Zealand and Australia have claimed to have invented the humble lamington.

The most popular story of its creation suggests the dessert, which typically consists of a vanilla sponge dipped in chocolate and rolled in desiccated coconut, was created by accident.

It's named after Lord Lamington, who was the governor of Queensland in the 1890s.

It's thought the governor's chef accidentally dropped cake into chocolate, so he rolled it in the coconut to salvage the sweet treat, which is now an Aussie classic.
