Australia’s best supermarket party pies have been crowned, just in time for the footy finals (and the spring picnics, kids parties and any other occasion where small yet delicious pies may be enjoyed).
Callan Boys, National Restaurant Editor for Good Food, has done the hard work on behalf of the country, presenting the results on Today Extra.

Ten brands sourced from Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and Costco were sampled by a team of four judges.
Boys said the team was looking for a “great texture” and a gravy that was “super savoury and delicious that makes you want to go back for more” as well as overall “snackability”.

Each party pie was also judged on meat content and meat-to-crust ratio.

The results: In third place is Herbert Adams Premium Gourmet King Island Beef Party Pies.
“It still did quite well, even though it got the bronze. It’s the most expensive brand ... a bit bougie,” Boys said. “They’re very good, they just don’t have that level of savoury oomph.”
He also observed that they are smaller than a standard party pie, and fell short of the top spot in part because the texture is “a little too grainy”.

In second place: Four ‘N Twenty Party Pies, which contain only 11 per cent beef.
“They know what they’re doing at Four ’N Twenty,” Boys explained. “They’ve been doing this for years. They know what makes a tasty meat pie.”
These party pies are also small rectangles rather than round, which Boys said makes them “good to hold on the couch”.

These are the most affordable of the three finalists, normally selling for $9 for a pack of 12. However, this week they are on special at Woolworths for $7.90.

“They have that wonderful gravy that you want to go back to,” he said, adding these contain the flavouring MSG, usually represented on ingredients lists as “flavour enhancer 621″, which some people prefer to avoid.
Patties Party Pies contain 22 per cent beef and usually cost $10.50 for a pack of 12, but they are on special this week at Coles for $6.30.
