Rumour has it that Queensland crumpets are completely different to the rest of the country, so we put it to the test
Forget the State of Origin, we've got a new state vs state battle ready to sweep the nation.
This time, we're battling it out over crumpets.
Whispers around town are that Queensland crumpets are different from the other states, with some claiming that they're thicker, fluffier and better.
So we decided to test this theory with a crumpet battle of our own – a 9honey taste test.

We got ourselves some Golden Bakery crumpets hand-delivered from Queensland, and purchased some of the same brand from our local grocery store in New South Wales.
So who would be would the winners?
As soon as we held both packets in our hands, it was clear we were onto something – these crumpets did not feel the same, and it was indeed Queensland's that appeared thicker.
Each crumpet was toasted in the exact same toaster, for the exact same amount of time, with an equal amount of butter spread over each one.

The Queensland crumpets were placed on one plate, the New South Wales on another.
Both where then placed in front of our team with no label as to avoid any biases derived from state loyalties.
We had members of our team taste each crumpet and share their thoughts, and the answer was not what we expected.
When first hearing the rumours of the state versus state crumpet battle, we were under the impression that the Queensland crumpets would sweep the competition, but that's not entirely how it worked out.
While reviews were divided, there was one thing that everyone (except for one person who said, "A crumpet is a crumpet, both are pretty bland") could agree on.
There was a clear difference.
And we're not imagining things either, a spokesperson from Tip Top Bakeries tells 9honey that the "much-loved household favourite" may differ when enjoyed in the Sunshine State.

"To ensure our customers can enjoy fresh crumpets every day, we operate local production lines," they say.
"In Queensland, crumpets are produced on a different line using alternative baking technology, which may explain a slight variation in shape and bite, however they have the same delicious flavour."
One of our taste testers commented: "I think the taste of the two crumpets was comparable, but the texture and size was noticeably different.
"[NSW] is more dense and compact, and [QLD] is thicker and fluffier."

It might just be because our team were looking for differences, but some did pick up some minor changes in flavour between the two.
Several taste testers noted that the Queensland crumpets had a "sweeter" taste to them, with one person even comparing it to a pancake.
"Its appearance has more holes and looks airier, but when you bite into it feels a little denser," another said of the Queensland crumpet.
"I could immediately picture myself lathering jam and cream on this one with an afternoon tea."

Almost everyone noted that the Queensland crumpet was thicker and denser, but that didn't mean it was preferred.
While the New South Wales Crumpet was the preferred option, it's important to note that majority of taste testers grew up in New South Wales, so a sense of familiarity could have been a factor here.
Most found that the fact the the New South Wales crumpets were a bit thinner meant that they had a bit more of a crunch to him, a seemingly very popular crumpet feature.

"[NSW] tasted way more like I'd expect a crumpet would," one person shared.
"It had a springy texture but the edge was nice and crispy, just how I like it. The taste was also a lot stronger; an almost perfect crumpet."
So, it seems the State of Origin has some competition on the horizon when it comes to the biggest state by state rivalry.
