Nick Reiner ‘hasn’t even received $5’ from family trust for jail commissary while awaiting trial for parents’ murder

The son accused of murdering beloved director Rob Reiner and his wife has complained because he has not been allowed to access his family’s money.

Nick Reiner has reportedly not received “even $5 for the jail commissary,” while awaiting trial over the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

Nick, 33, is being held on murder charges at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles and has been fighting to access the Reiner family trust while in jail, worth roughly $US1.6 million ($2.2 million).

The legal documents address successor trustee Jodi Pais Montgomery, and former trustee Paul R. Kanin, with Reiner’s attorneys responding to their objections to not letting Reiner have access to the trust.

Two separate legal documents, which were filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, and obtained by People Magazine, argue Reiner has not been able to buy necessities for himself from the jail commissary without access to the trust.

The letter, written by attorneys Anita P. Wu and Geoffrey A. Neri to Montgomery reportedly reads: “In the meantime, Nick still has not been able to access even $US5 ($7) from his trust to buy basic subsistence items from the jail commissary.”

They go on to argue that Reiner has repeatedly tried to obtain his trust fund, but has been delayed at every turn.

“Since then, Nick has been unable to access money that is lawfully his own — to re-engage criminal defence counsel, or even for basic subsistence items from the jail commissary,” the document says, according to People.

The dispute is revolving an “Age-30 Distribution” clause in the trust, which required the funds to be paid to Reiner when he turned 30 on September 14, 2023.

According to Reiner’s attorneys at least $US558,000 ($782,279.55) was due to him that day.

“Nick turned 30 on September 14, 2023. By the Successor Trustee’s own calculation, at least $558,000 became due and payable to him that day. His parents were alive. No one had accused him of anything,” the filing alleges.

The filing goes on to argue that the money was due to Reiner before his parents’ death, and should not be subject to California’s Slayer Statute. The statute prevents a person from benefiting from a death they caused.

“The Slayer Statute, the sole remaining basis for withholding this money, takes away what a person receives as a result of someone’s death,” the documents claim.

“It does not implicate money that became Nick’s years earlier.”

Los Angeles police allege Reiner brutally stabbed his parents, Rob and Michele, to death in their Brentwood home in December 2025.

In a separate letter responding to Kanin’s objections, they say the former trustee agreed to deposit funds into the commissary account in April 2026, however, the money was reportedly not released.

“No deposit was ever made. Kanin never withdrew the commitment; it was simply never honoured,” Reiner’s attorneys allege.

Kanin serves as trustee for 15 weeks before resigning in May 2026.

“The harm here is severe and ongoing. Nick has been deprived of the use of his own money and has been unable to pay for criminal defence counsel and experts since January 2026, prejudicing his ability to defend against double homicide charges with special circumstances,” the document claims.

It continues, arguing that another $325,000 in trust assets originated with his grandfather Carl Reiner who died in June 2020, meaning Reiner would be entitled to that money.

“Either way, the Slayer Statute has no application to that money,” it reads.

“Nick’s grandfather died on June 29, 2020. Nick is not accused of causing his death. Money that was left to Nick by his grandfather is not money received by Nick from or through his parents.”

Amid other legal claims the attorneys then asked the court to order the payment of the Age-30 distribution and to fund Reiner’s commissary account.

Reiner was indicted on two counts of first degree murder with special circumstances of lying in wait in July 2026. He faces a potential life sentence without the chance of parole.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges twice. If convicted, he will not face the death penalty.
