Tony Award-winning Broadway legend Duncan Sheik dies aged 56
Tony and Grammy award-winning Broadway musician Duncan Sheik has died aged 56.
Sheik rose to fame in 1996 with his hit song Barely Breathing. He went on to write the score for the Broadway musical sensation Spring Awakening in 2006.

The beloved musician and Broadway alum died on September 17 from heart failure leading to cardiac arrest, his mum told the New York Times.
A later statement posted to his Instagram account confirmed the passing.
“The world has a lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theatre,” it reads.
“From his Grammy-nominated hit ‘Barely Breathing’ to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.”
The statement continues, reading: “Duncan was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend.”
“He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him.
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community. His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
“Duncan passed away last night surrounded by love.”
Earlier this week, his family shared a health update on Sheik’s Instagram account, saying he was “receiving medical care” and was in a “critical but stable condition.”
“Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time.”

“We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate,” the statement continued. “Thank you for the continued love and support.”
Sheik’s death comes just days after his newest musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen opened off-Broadway.
The musician won the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album for Spring Awakening in 2008.

The same musical won him two Tony Awards, one for Best Original Score and another for Best Orchestrations.
The musical went on to win another six Tony Awards.
Sheik leaves behind his wife, Nora Ariffin and their daughter Ines, 7.
