Michele, Rob Reiner’s son won’t face execution over their deaths

Nick Reiner will not face the death penalty if found guilty of the murder of his parents Michele and Rob Reiner, prosecutors have said.
The Hollywood icons’ son, 33, is accused of stabbing his parents to death in their home in Brentwood, California, last December.

He faces charges of two counts of first degree murder and an additional charge of lying in wait.
He has pleaded not guilty.
Now, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office has revealed prosecutors won’t seek the death penalty if Nick Reiner is found guilty.
“This decision reflects our careful judgment about the most appropriate path to take in this case and does not diminish the severity of these crimes,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement released by the office.
“I have spoken to the Reiner family and evaluated the mitigating and aggravating factors that are part of special circumstance murder cases.
“Seeking capital punishment should be reserved for the most egregious instances, and we determined after a thorough review that the death penalty was not the appropriate resolution in this case.”
If found guilty, Nick Reiner could face a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.
LA County deputy public defender Kimberley Greene, representing the accused, said forgoing the death penalty was the right decision.
“Nick has a serious mental illness and a long history of struggling with self-medication,” she said in a statement reported by CNN and other US outlets.
“His circumstances are a tragic example of how difficult it can be for people experiencing significant mental health challenges to access and navigate the treatment and support they need.”

Nick Reiner appeared in court on Tuesday local time this week, where a judge made the decision to order grand jury records that led to Reiner’s indictment sealed.
Michele and Rob Reiner were given an emotional farewell in yesterday’s Emmy awards, where the latter won a posthumous acting award for his appearance on The Bear.
The couple, who married in 1989, had two other children, Jake and Romy.
Michele Reiner was a prominent photographer, film producer, and activist, while Rob was a renowned director and actor.
