Mel Gibson has separated from his partner of nine years, Rosalind Ross.

The actor, 69, and the screenwriter, 35, shared the news in a statement to People, saying they will co-parent their eight-year-old son Lars.

"Although it's sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible," the former couple said.

Gibson and Ross, who largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight, quietly split around a year ago.

The news comes almost a year after the former couple's Malibu home burned down in the Los Angeles wildfires in January.

"We're all happy and healthy and out of harm's way, that's all I can care about, really," Gibson said at the time.

The Mad Max star met Ross, a screenwriter, director and former equestrian vaulter, through mutual friends in 2014, and they welcomed Lars in 2017.

Gibson – who has nine children in total – announced his son's arrival days later, in a statement reacting to his Oscar nomination for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge.

"What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son," he said.

During their relationship, the couple faced some scrutiny over their 34-year age gap, but Gibson denied it was an issue in a 2016 interview.

"Regarding age and relationships, it's just a number," he told The Mirror.

"We dig each other. She is an adult and we dig each other. It might cause a problem and one has a trepidation about these things, but it's working out great.

"She is a really special person. I dig her. So there you go. That's it. What more can one ask?"
