Tatiana Schlossberg, daughter of Caroline Kennedy, dies aged 35 weeks after revealing terminal cancer diagnosis

Tatiana Schlossberg, the 35-year-old daughter of Caroline Kennedy, has died weeks after going public with her terminal cancer diagnosis.

The news was shared by the JFK Library Foundation, on behalf of her extended family, on December 30 (this morning in Australia).

"Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts," the post, signed by Schlossberg's husband and two children, parents, siblings and sister-in-law, read.

Schlossberg, the granddaughter of former US president John F Kennedy, revealed she had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in a moving essay published by The New Yorker in November.

The environmental journalist said doctors had found the cancer during routine blood tests while she was in hospital after welcoming her second child in May 2024.

"I did not – could not – believe that they were talking about me," she wrote.

"I had swum a mile in the pool the day before, nine months pregnant. I wasn't sick. I didn't feel sick. I was actually one of the healthiest people I knew."

Schlossberg spent five weeks at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital after giving birth, before being transferred to Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital for a bone-marrow transplant.

She then underwent chemotherapy at home before joining a clinical trial of CAR-T-cell therapy (a type of immunotherapy against certain blood cancers) in January.

Despite these efforts, the author was eventually told she only had a year left to live.

Schlossberg was the second of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg's three children, also including sister Rose and brother Jack.

She shared two children, Edwin and Josephine, with husband George Moran.

Her death is a cruel blow for Kennedy, who has endured the losses of both of her parents, JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy, and her brother, John F Kennedy, Jr., in her lifetime.

"For my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry," Schlossberg wrote in her essay.

"Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family's life, and there's nothing I can do to stop it."

Kennedy's cousin Maria Shriver praised the former US ambassador to Australia for being a "rock" for her daughter in her final days.

"What a source of love she has been with Ed, Rose, Rory, Jack, George, Eddie, Josie, and all of Tatiana's cousins and friends and the amazing doctors who tried so hard," she wrote on Instagram.

Shriver shared a series of photos of "[her] sweet, beloved Tatiana", reflecting on her loss.

"I return to this space to pay tribute and honor her loving and supportive family, who came together and did everything they possibly could do to help her," she continued.

"I return to this space heartbroken because Tatiana loved life. She loved her life, and she fought like hell to try to save it."

"I cannot make sense of this. I cannot make any sense of it at all. None. Zero.

"Tatiana was a great journalist, and she used her words to educate others about the earth and how to save it. She created a beautiful life with her extraordinary husband George, and children Eddie and Josie.

"She fought like a warrior. She was valiant, strong, courageous."

"Those of us left behind will make sure Eddie and Josie know what a beautiful, courageous spirit their mother was and will always be. She takes after her extraordinary mother, Caroline."
