Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns self-admitting to rehab facility following car accident

Daniel Johns has been charged with drink driving after colliding with another car.

NSW Police confirmed the musician was assessed at the scene of the crash by NSW Ambulance paramedics before officers conducted a roadside breath test which returned a positive result.

The Silverchair frontman is admitting himself into a rehab facility following the car accident on the Mid Coast of NSW.

Johns, 42, announced in a social media post on Thursday morning that he is taking a "step back" to work on his mental health.

"As you know, my mental health is a work in progress. I have good days and bad days but it's something I always have to manage," he began his statement.

"Over the last week I began to experience panic attacks.

"Last night I got lost while driving and I was in an accident. I am OK, everyone is OK.

"Alongside my therapy, I've been self-medicating with alcohol to deal with my PTSD, anxiety and depression. I know this is not sustainable or healthy."

Police allege he returned a roadside breath test positive to alcohol.

Johns has been issued a court attendance notice for high-range drink driving.

Johns said he does not know how long he will be in rehab.

"I have to step back now as I'm self admitting to a rehabilitation centre and I don't know how long I'll be there. Appreciate your love and support as always," he wrote.

Johns received an immediate outpouring of love and support from fans, as well as a number of Australian music stars.

"Love you D," wrote The Veronicas singer Jessica Origliasso, while singer Amy Shark added, "Always here for u Dan."

"Love you brother! Take care of yourself. The world will be here," US rocker Zach Myers commented.

Johns' announcement comes one day after the announcement of his new philanthropic venture, FutureNeverFund, which aims to help "people and animals who would never have a future if not for some financial intervention."

"I recognise that I'm in a very privileged position to use my platform to help raise funds and awareness for a number of inspiring groups doing extraordinary things around the world," he said as part of the announcement.

"I said if I was going to come back and make music again, it had to be with purpose. While the purpose behind the music was never in doubt, I wanted to ensure that there was also some purpose behind the commerce. I'm looking forward to making this something special."

Earlier this month, Johns revealed to Rolling Stone Australia he has no desire to perform live again.

"Some people write records so they can perform it live, which is completely cool, but I don't write music so I can perform it," he said in the April issue of the magazine.

"I just don't feel like a performing artist. I don't feel like a touring artist. I feel like someone who needs to come up with stuff, and come up with new s--t."

Johns shot to international fame in the '90s when he founded the Newcastle band Silverchair in 1992 with his mates Ben Gillies on drums and Chris Joannou on bass guitar. The band received 49 ARIA nominations, 21 of which they won, which is more than any other artist in the history of the awards.
