Exclusive: A closer look at the 'terrifying' journey the trekkers are set to embark on during The Summit 2023

It's almost time for The Summit.

Very soon, we'll see 14 strangers attempt to reach the peak of a mountain in New Zealand's South Island with $1 million split between their backpacks.

Oh, and there's tons of "terrifying" twists and challenges they'll face along the way.

The Summit Season 1 is coming soon to Channel 9 and 9Now.

Ahead of the show's premiere, we've got the inside scoop showing exactly what the group will be getting themselves into – all of which you can watch in the video above.

In the clip, host Jai Courtney explains: "Not only will this rugged, beautiful environment test our 14 competitors both physically and mentally, but there's also something else out there, totally unexpected.

"There's something out there, watching their every move. The Mountain's Keeper."

We then see a flash of a sinister black helicopter swooping over the trekkers, as tensions rise during the climb to the top.

"The game is perfectly simple," Jai adds. "They start with an equal share of $1 million, and carry it all the way to the top. They'll face harsh conditions, soul-crushing terrain and freezing temperatures, all at high-altitude.

"Did I mention these are ordinary people? Not professional mountaineers.

"With each passing day they'll thrive off their achievements. But covering vast kilometres, steep climbs and terrifying descents, it won't be easy."

But that's not all, he adds.

"We've got some daunting challenges planned," he continues. "Obstacles which will be sure to complicate their path – and a few secrets up our sleeve that will force their hand and test the strongest of bonds.

"With $1 million on the line, who will quit, who will be booted out and who will scheme and strategise all the way to The Summit?"

The Summit will premiere on Sunday 14 May at 7:00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
