Room Reveal: Rick and Tayla’s Guest Bedroom
The father-and-daughter duo worked down to the wire to complete their Guest Bedroom, only for the judges to brutally question whether they deserved to be there.
Week 1 had a lot of setbacks for father-and-daughter duo Rick and Tayla, from delayed insulation to a missing artwork. Thankfully, they still managed to deliver a completed Guest Bedroom ... but were the judges impressed?

The duo felt good ahead of judging, with Tayla describing it was “the funnest, hardest week of [her] whole life”. She was confident they had a chance to win – that was, until the judges’ feedback began.

“I think there are three great things about this room,” Marty said on first impression. “The carpet, the wardrobes and the door to leave.” Savage.

Marty pointed out something you will not be able to unsee: the bed was totally off-centre, and the lights are clearly not aligned either. “I don’t understand, you’re in a competition and this is what you produce?” he said.

He labelled it “bland as hell”, and that was in comparison to rooms in other houses he’d already considered bland.

The trio had big problems with the chair in the corner, which was far too big for the space. It showed them Rick and Tayla weren’t thinking about the basics.

There were a lot of bed cushions, but it wasn’t enough to solve a major problem with the acoustics.

As Shaynna took it all in, she couldn’t help but bury her head in her hands. She pointed out the room had an echo, was devoid of textures and was, in fact, “void of emotion”.

Alice went even further, saying it was “void of life”, personality or soul.

While they had styled the side tables nicely, it wasn’t enough to distract the judges from the poor placement of the light switches, which you couldn’t reach from the bed.
