It's time for Shaynna Blaze and her kids Carly and Jess to get their hands dirty and tackle phase one of their renovation of a 130-year-old Kyneton home.

The family are starting the reno upstairs with the bedrooms, one for Carly and one for granddaughter Olive, and Shaynna is converting an existing middle bedroom into a joint bathroom.

They'll also be tackling a staircase and laundry and powder room downstairs.

If that's not enough work, budget constraints, clashing styles and material delays caused by the pandemic are about to double the stress of Shaynna's first room reveals.

Shaynna is forced to compromise her design

At the start of the renovation, Shaynna blew $50k of her $100k budget contingency on demolition work.

It's a big learning curve that quickly teaches Shaynna the importance of budgeting.

"It's so important I'm really conscious of the time and labour it takes to do some of the finer details," Shaynna says to cameras.

While Shaynna was looking forward to a home full of "fanciful details", the tight budget constraints mean she has to pull back on some of her dream plans.

And where's better to start than the laundry and powder room?

Although Shaynna originally wanted the tiles laid in a more intricate herringbone pattern, she's settling for a simpler subway style pattern to save on time and money.

"These are details that I will notice but a lot of people may not, so that's what I'm looking at doing," Shaynna says.

Shaynna Blaze has concerns about her budget. Nine

Shaynna doesn't struggle too much changing her design in the smaller laundry area and while she's not sure she'll be so willing to do the same when it comes to bigger spaces, she doesn't really have a choice.

"It's pretty hard at this stage not to be stressed out by the budget," Shaynna admits.

"Materials are escalating in price, the timeline is being pushed out and I've put my life savings into this so it's just got to be worth it."

Mother Shaynna and daughter Carly butt heads

Perhaps Carly isn't as aware of the budget stresses on the build.

And when one of the chippies offers to make Carly custom bedside tables for her bedroom, she gives it the green light.

But she fails to run the plan by head designer mum or head builder Matt Menichelli.

"We're in over our heads, we're up against a time frame. I think we can bump the bedside tables down the priority list," Matt says.

Shaynna is much more forthcoming when she raises the issue with Carly.

"You do realise that it will cost about $1000 for Jerome to make that," she grills her daughter.

Carly says she "didn't know".

And even though Shaynna says "it can't be done", Carly toys around with a few more ideas and the duo's conversations quickly turns into a family tiff.

"I'm done, you work it out," Shaynna snaps.

"You're really starting to annoy me now," Carly replies.

"And you're not f---ing annoying me," Shaynna laughs in frustration.

But like all mothers and daughters, the pair hug it out and get "over it"... for the most part.

"I don't think anyone was right or wrong, I think maybe some ideas were mis-conveyed," Carly tells cameras.

The first rooms are revealed

There's no time to waste on silly squabbles with Jess his wife Emma and daughter Olive coming down for the big reveal.

"I just feel like them coming up as a family to see this whole space, I'm feeling like memories will be made straight away," Shaynna says.

First up is the laundry and powder room.

Shaynna says she was going for a space that was "functional yet beautiful".

And with "masses of storage", Shaynna certainly nails the brief.

The interior designer explains her approach to the powder room: "I've connected Victorian and deco details with contemporary functionality."

In Carly's bedroom, Shaynna perfectly captures her daughter's personality with warm tones and retro features.

Looking around the room, Carly says her mum "absolutely nailed everything" and agrees it's certainly an upgrade from a share house.

Granddaughter Olive's bedroom is a magical wonderland that tugs at the heart strings.

"To me, she felt at home and that's everything!" Shaynna beams.

"I cannot get over how light it is in here," daughter-in-law Emma remarks.

Shaynna has one more surprise up her sleeve and it's for Jess and Olive.

Shaynna created Narnia's wardrobe in her own house.  Nine

She's transformed the dark and dingy storage area into their very own Narnia wardrobe!

"All I needed were a few coats, lights, twigs and some artwork to reignite a personal memory for Jess and help Olive make new ones," Shaynna says.
