Former Block contestant Jenna Densten shows how to restore an old table using oven cleaner

Much-loved Block couple Josh and Jenna have been taking us along on their journey to restore an old property in country Victoria.

So far they've styled a shed into their temporary home and revealed some of their plans for the house they're renovating.

Now Jenna has shared a tutorial video on YouTube for her latest project, restoring an old hall table by stripping the varnish.

The hall table is one of the vintage furniture pieces used in the shed house Jenna, Josh and the kids are living in during the renovation.

While Jenna was a fan of the table's scalloped edges, she wasn't keen on the orange varnish it had.

So she took the table out to a well-ventilated area along with two cans of heavy-duty oven cleaner, gloves, a mask and a pressure washer.

Before starting the process to remove the old varnish, Jenna took off the old drawer handles, which will be replaced later. Then she put on her protective gear and got to work.

"Spray the oven cleaner evenly over the surface. Then hose it down after about 20 minutes. Leave it to dry for a little while and repeat the process," Jenna said in her YouTube video.

After the two coats and some drying time, Jenna sanded the table lightly and attached the new drawer handles.

Then the table was moved into the shed where Jenna's daughter Story helped style it with artwork, a book, plant, urn and semi-circle shaped vase.

"We left it raw and didn't apply varnish as it's simply a hall table. If you want to seal it but maintain a matte and natural finish, my pick is Osmo oil," Jenna said.

"The end result is full of character and warmth, and we said goodbye to the orange."

Josh and Jenna moved to Rutherglen, Victoria in late 2021 from inner-city Melbourne for a change of lifestyle. Their country property has been dubbed "The Castle House" and will be renovated to reflect the simplified life they moved out of the city for.

"I think the heritage home calls for a bit of playfulness — the high-ceilings, the ornate details allows for some colour in a fun but empathetic way. So I'm really excited to get my hands on this part," Jenna said in another YouTube video.

The renovations have begun but Josh and Jenna have revealed there have been some delays while waiting on council approval for the roof.

Josh and Jenna first competed on The Block in 2011 and returned for an All Stars season in 2013.
