Major backyard blunder brings Emma and Ben's landscaping to a sudden stop: 'It's killing me'

The Block's House 1 was in the middle of a consult with Freedom stylist Serena when Emma noticed a major backyard blunder was about to unfold before her very eyes.

Their initial plans included a large area of pavers from the deck to the pool but as the framework was laid out, Emma realised how much of an eyesore it was.

"It looks like a skatepark," Emma said totally deflated.

The concrete was just minutes away from being poured when Emma, Ben and their landscaper Colin brought work to a sudden stop.

Emma suggested putting a circle of grass in the middle of all the concrete to soften it with some greenery.

While Ben worried it was "a bit late now", landscaper Colin had a different approach.

"If we're gonna do it, we need to do it now," Colin ordered the team of tradies.

Emma knew the last-minute change would be "cutting it for her time" but stuck to her guns.

"The truck was on its way ready to pour all the concrete but it was killing me," she vented to cameras.

The whole crew jumped on deck to mark out the circular area where grass would be laid instead of concrete and Emma was relieved that the backyard would look "much better" as a result of the change.

Emma and Ben's near backyard blunder helped them learn an important lesson in outdoor planning and styling.

Map out defined zones based on activity

Plan your backyard according to distinct functional zones. Think about areas you want for dining, lounging, vegetable gardens or play areas.

Map these zones out as well as any pathways in between. By laying it out visually, you will avoid overcrowding spaces and will be able to purposefully purchase furniture and plants.

Knowing the sun's movement throughout the day will help determine the ideal location for a lounge zone, while clocking any privacy issues will allow you to budget and plan for screening elements like tall planters or a pergola.
