Teams baffled by the unlikely winner of Scott Cam's antique valuation challenge on The Block 2022

A fun challenge to find the most valuable antique for The Block teams' kitchens has caused confusion after Ankur and Sharon won with a bizarre selection.

Host Scott Cam gave contestants $100 to buy an antique item for their kitchen. The highest value piece wins a $12,000 fireplace from Schots plus $1,000 cash.

Rachel submitted a $90 set of collectible spoons for her and Rachel's entry, but unfortunately auctioneer Steve Graham valued them at $90.

"They've got native animals on them and they're quite spectacular. They would've been a wedding present more than likely back in the day," he said.

The blunt assessment was just another blow for Rachel who was already struggling with the pressure of The Block after weeks of tough feedback from the judges.

But what really confused her was Steve's comment that "no one would use the spoons unfortunately nowadays".

While Steve is likely referring to collectible spoons going out of fashion, Rachel and Ryan think they can still be used to stir a cup of tea.

Next up was Tom and Sarah-Jane's copper jug, which Steve thinks looks good in the kitchen and is much more functional than collectible spoons.

The jug cost Sarah-Jane $35 and was valued at $120, giving House 1 a profit of $85.

Then it was Omar and Oz's turn with a gold-plated tea cup by Aynsley, which they paid $30 for. Steve valued this piece at $70, giving House 5 a profit of $40.

Dylan and Jenny's item was a teapot that looked like it was a tea-for-one set and cost them $50.

Steve noticed the piece was damaged and while Jenny argued it was "a feature", it meant the teapot was valued at $80. This meant House 4 made a profit of $30.

At this point Tom and Sarah-Jane were in the lead with their copper jug, unless Ankur and Sharon could present an item with a higher profit.

House 3 put forward the $800 mirror that Sharon managed to barter down to $100.

"It's an interesting piece but again, very functional – you can use it and you can look at yourself, which is the best part about it. So it's a good solid piece, it's not flimsy. I would think at a good auction, it's probably about $250," Steve said.

That meant Ankur and Sharon took out the win with a profit of $150.

It was a happy moment for the husband and wife after a challenging couple of weeks on The Block, and a small boost to their dwindling reno budget.

"We won something! We needed it too. That fireplace I was already looking at weeks ago when we first started and all the boys in our team were just like 'Can't afford it'... but now we got it," Sharon said.

However the fact a mirror was allowed to enter the competition, let alone win, struck the other teams as odd given the piece needed to be put in their kitchens.

"Now they get a beautiful mirror in their kitchen come Sunday. You can watch yourself cook," Omar laughed.

Tom wasn't laughing though because he thinks the mirror belongs in a dressing room.

"The rules were stuff to put in your kitchen," he said.

"Well they're gonna put the mirror in the kitchen, that's what they said," Sarah-Jane added.

But Tom thinks it was "a full blown sympathy vote" for Ankur and Sharon, who left site for some time out last week after a difficult conversation with Scotty and Shelley Craft about their frustrations on The Block.

Regardless of how the challenge played out, the rules mean we will be seeing a stunning antique mirror in Ankur and Sharon's kitchen when it's revealed on Sunday. The question is, what will the judges have to say about it?
