Kevin Costner's shares his thoughts on how Yellowstone really should've ended after his character was killed off the show

Yellowstone star Kevin Costner may be ready to hang up the saddle when it comes to the franchise, but not without one final word.

The Academy Award^® winning actor played patriarch John Dutton III for five monumental seasons before Costner made a shock exit when his character was killed off.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Costner quipped that Yellowstone should have ended very differently – at least from a realistic standpoint.

"Well it's modern day ranching, Yellowstone was able to capture that really so beautifully," the 70-year-old told the publication.

"I mean, it's a bit of a soap opera. We should all be in prison," he said of their characters.

The remark was seemingly in reference to all the crimes and deaths that occurred in the hit-drama series that the Duttons (and ranchers) have each year meticulously gotten away with.

But if the Duttons hadn't got away with such acts, fans wouldn't have the happy ending and spin-off series they have begged for.

Earlier this month actor Luke Grimes announced he will be making a return to the Yellowstone franchise as he confirmed a sequel series is officially in the works.

As reported on Deadline the CBS Network has officially ordered the Yellowstone sequel under the working title Y: Marshals.

Continuing creator Taylor Sheridan's universe, the new drama will star Grimes as he reprises his role of youngest Dutton son, Kayce Dutton.

Taking to Instagram, Luke Grimes confirmed the news.

"Cowboys don't say goodbye, they say see you later," he wrote sharing the announcement.

It's reported Kayce Dutton will join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in the new series, where he will combine his skills as a cowboy and military background to bring justice to Montana range.

While Grimes returns to screens, so will Costner in upcoming eight-part documentary series The West.

Costner will host and serve as executive producer for the brand new documentary series first announced in April 2025.

While hosting the series, Costner will take fans on a unique journey through the Wild West spanning a century of lawmen, outlaws, cowboys, ranchers and everything in between.

Joining executive producer and Pulitzer Prize^® winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the unmissable series for history and Western fans alike will premiere with a triple episode from May 28, only on Stan.
