A shock twist ends tense rivalry with brutal elimination: Biggest moments of Episode 4 of The Summit 2024

It's day six of The Summit and the trekkers still have a whopping 117 kilometres to climb to the top of the mountain and win the remaining $816k prize money.

To make things even harder, they're starting the day after a less than optimal night sleeping out in the open air.

Simmone, who has an injured shoulder, is feeling very vulnerable ahead of the next elimination – but she might be okay because some of the other trekkers are diving head first into the strategic deep end.

Yep, there is a big rivalry brewing.

Here are the biggest moments from Episode 4 of The Summit Season 2.

The trekkers learn about 'chaser' Sam

Season 1's "most capable player" Sam was only released as The Chaser yesterday and he's already just 20 kilometres behind the group.

Yikes. They really need to get a move on!

But before they head off for the day, Jai's impromptu visit to the camp gives everyone reason to panic as he lets them in on The Chaser secret.

"Yesterday morning, a new hiker was set loose to chase you down," he says. "If they catch you they will get to steal someone's money and kick them off the mountain."

Ava realises the group are in danger because the person taking on the trek and all the challenges alone "must be a machine, stronger and fitter than the rest of us".

We think Sam would agree.

Jai warns the group they need to "do better and work better together" to avoid being caught.

On that note, they spring into action – although this is The Summit, so they would be silly to think there won't be another obstacle (or 20) waiting for them just around the corner.

Olympia falls from bridge as two Mountain's Keepers reveal a game-changing elimination challenge

What is more terrifying than one Mountain's Keeper chopper trying to throw the trekkers off their game as they literally hang above a gushing waterfall?

TWO Mountain's Keeper choppers, of course.

The Mountain's Keeper has brought along a friend for Season 2 and the intimidating reveal came during the challenge, which requires the trekkers hang upside down and cross a rope dangling above the water completely solo.

The double act has dire consequences, as the wind from the helicopters blows Olympia off the rope and slows down the team's progress.

Two helicopter propellers means a whole lot wind and it was too much for actress Olympia to take.

Overwhelmed by the amount of outside interference, Olympia fell from the rope bridge and was left suspended mid-air.

And that wasn't the pair's only fun.

At the Checkpoint, Jai reveals the Mountain's Keepers were involved in a huge twist that would have devastating consequences ahead of the elimination.

"Any time you see one helicopter you're freaking out, and then you get two?! This can only mean trouble," Trisha says.

She was definitely right.

"They're going to drop a red bag and they're going to drop a black bag. You're all going to be running for a duffle," Jai explains.

"You must pick a side; five red, five black."

The bags quite literally split the trekkers down the middle: Lochie, Charlotte, Olympia, Simmone and Tiff choose black and Mat, Taylor, Phil, Trisha and Ava choose red.

"One of these bags represents safety, one of these bags is just for the vulnerable. Pick the safe bag and you can't be voted for tonight, find yourself with the vulnerable bag and you can be voted off the mountain right now," Jai says.

Just when everyone thinks they've got the game figured out, huh?

'Godfather' Mat wins the game of strategy as Lochie is eliminated

Lochie notices that Mat has become a leader amongst the group, and therefore makes it his mission to get him off the mountain.

"Mat the rat needs to get down from that pedestal and roll off home down the mountain, and I'm the right person to knock him off," Lochie declares.

But Mat, who became known as 'the Godfather' because of his incredible strategic game during two season's of Survivor, is certainly not an easy target.

His alliance with Charlotte comes in handy as she gives him that head's up that Lochie is after him, which sends Mat's game-play into overdrive.

At the Checkpoint, both Lochie and Mat do their best to get numbers on their side.

Mat throws Lochie off the scent by suggesting that he will be gunning for Simmone – and then opens a margarita bar to serve cocktails with a very cunning side of strategy.

Genius.

"I love Lochie but he's been throwing me under a bus and it just hasn't worked for him. he just went too hard, too soon," Mat says.

Later, when Mat's duffle bag is revealed to be the safe one, Lochie's fate is all but sealed.

He is voted off the mountain and concedes that taking on the Godfather was perhaps not his brightest idea.

"I played my cards a little bit wrong. Matty certainly pulled his strings. He's knocked me off the mountain before I can knock him off and unfortunately, I was beaten by a better player in the game."

The Summit airs Monday to Wednesday at 7:30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
