Alexander Zverev has prevailed in another late-night five-set marathon to reach the third round of the US Open.

The top seed lost a fourth-set tiebreak to Quentin Halys but proved too good for the Frenchman in the deciding set, taking the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-4.

It took Zverev four hours and 33 minutes to get the job done, and the match finished after 2am.

“He’s put himself in deficit,” Jim Courier said in commentary, “but he is giving himself a chance.”

The German star will take on Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in the third round.

Alexander Zverev has just vented his frustration at the chair umpire because there’s no one around to restring racquets and deliver them.

“How is that possible?” the volatile German said.

Jim Courier explained the issue.

“When you play with these racquets, as you keep hitting the ball they lose tension. They get looser and become more of a trampoline, so you lose control,” Courier said in commentary.

“You gain power, but when a new ball comes into play, it plays faster than a used ball, so players normally want tighter strings for those new balls.

“There should be racquets being rapidly strung and brought back to him.”

Alexander Zverev is filthy that this match against France’s Quentin Halys is not over yet.

The tournament’s top seed had to dig deep after dropping the second set and copping another brutal scare during a third-set tiebreak. He looked all but sure to have the match sealed in his favour, but Halys had other plans.

Halys did manage to serve and stay in the match, forcing an epic tiebreak. Zverev looked far from impressed that he could not get the job done before that point.

The Frenchman leads the tiebreak 3-1.
