US Open recap: American star stuns defending champion Alcaraz with ‘huge victory’

American Ben Shelton stunned Carlos Alcaraz in a mammoth match during the US Open quarter-finals, sealing a gritty 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) victory, sealed by a blistering 235km/h ace.

As the clock ticked past 3.33am in New York City, Shelton roared in triumph as he dethroned the defending champion in an intense final-set tiebreaker.

The defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz struggled physically on the court against Ben Shelton.

He was spotted throwing up into a towel and gestured to his box during the match that he was not feeling well.

Any player would be expected to not be feeling too hot after a five-set epic that stretched for over four hours, but Alcaraz was bested by rival Shelton to set up an all-American semi-final with Frances Tiafoe.

Speaking after the mammoth match, Ben Shelton praised the crowd for their continuous energy, even into the wee hours of the morning.

“For me, it’s always about the people in the crowd,” he said.

“Whether it’s my coaches and my team over there, all my family and friends over here, or the city of New York that showed up tonight till 3am.

“With the USA chants until the very end, that’s what kept me going, and that’s what got me this win tonight.

“It’s incredible. I always say that this is the greatest sports city in the world. I say that this is the greatest stadium in the world.

He also heaped praise onto his rival Carlos Alcaraz, who was quick to vacate the court after his defeat in the US Open quarter-finals.

“Sharing the court with Carlos is an absolute honour, and I cherish every moment that I have out here,” Shelton continued.

The first time Shelton has beaten a top three ranked player, Carlos Alcaraz was there with the American all the way, but Shelton went the distance to call this match victory his, just as the clock passes 3:30am in New York City.

“Unbelievable effort, another grand slam semi-finals,” says Dokic.

In an insane move of physicality and grit, Carlos Alcaraz has rallied to get himself ahead of the home hero.
