Australia has beaten the US to qualify for the Rugby Sevens semi-finals for the first time at the Olympics, taking their quarter-final 18-0.

Maurice Longbottom added a penalty in the second half, after the Aussies led 10-0 at the break, and then scored a try to ice the game.

Nathan Lawson, Henry Hutchison scored tries in the first half, in a match that was defined by the Aussies' tough defence.

Corey Toole tried to extend Australia's lead midway through the second half but the video official denied the effort.

Australia leads at halftime in their rugby sevens quarter-final against the USA

The Aussies conceded an early penalty which gave the US good ball down their end, but their defence survived the test.

Dietrich Roache was brought off with an injury midway through the first half, with the Aussies going on the attack shortly after but gave away another penalty.

Their fortune changed though moments later, when a US mistake handed the ball to Australia inside the 20-metre zone, with James Turner opening the scoring on the left edge to give the Aussies a 5-0 lead.

They doubled their lead during the final moments of the first half to be up 10-0.

Dolphins head coach Rohan Taylor has spoken after allowing Michael Palfrey to remain in Paris.

"After extended conversations, with athletes, the athlete leadership group, and coaching staff we have made the decision for Michael to stay. It is not one we have taken lightly and I stress this is an ongoing discussion for when we return home."

The Aussies beat Argentina earlier today 22-14 to top their group and remain undefeated.

Australian Team Chef de Mission Anna Meares has confirmed that Michael Palfrey will continue to be part of the Dolphins coaching team following a recommendation by head coach Rohan Taylor.

"I support Rohan Taylor and his team and the decision they have taken in the interests of the swimming team. It is a decision based on high-performance and wellbeing," Meares said.

The Dolphins senior management team spoke with athletes, including those coached by Palfrey, the athlete leadership group and coaches in response to Palfrey recent comments regarding Korean athlete Kim Woo-min.

Also part of the conversation were Dolphins Sam Short and Elijah Winnington, whom Woo-min competes against.

Taylor said athlete welfare across the entire 41-member pool team was at the forefront of the decision for Palfrey to stay on in Paris.

"We took the time to consider the two options – for Mick Palfrey to stay … and for Michael Palfrey to be sent home," Taylor said.

"After extended conversations, with athletes, the athlete leadership group, and coaching staff we have made the decision for Michael to stay. It is not one we have taken lightly and I stress this is an ongoing discussion for when we return home."

We are minutes away from learning if Michael Palfrey will remain in Paris or be sent home.
