'Pretty weird': Bizarre weather delay gifts Australia's Jakara Anthony World Cup gold medal, Matt Graham takes silver

Jakara Anthony knows exactly what it takes to win a World Cup gold, but her latest victory did not follow the same path as many of those she has claimed in the past.

A weather-hit event in Canada on Saturday saw two Australian skiers land on the podium, although Anthony's first-place finish was decided by her qualification run in the moguls.

Poor visibility reduced the women's event to a single run, while the men's event was able to perform both a qualification and a one-run final later in the day.

Anthony set the tone for qualifying with an impressive run down the slopes, recording a score of 79.83 to position herself atop the standings.

America's Tess Johnson was the closest to Anthony's score by the end of qualifying, finishing in second with 75.85. Olivia Giaccio sat third with 75.78.

Delays in the competition were then announced by tournament officials, leaving all to wait and learn if the qualification runs would eventually decide the podium.

In a matter of time, that podium decision was made, with Anthony winning gold.

"It was a different victory, pretty weird competition day," she said.

"But having put it down in qualifications worked out for me with finals cancelled.

"I find it pretty important to put down the best run that I can from round to round, with the goal to build throughout the day, so that's just what I was out there doing."

The win puts the reigning Olympic champion further ahead on the overall season standings and confirms she will wear the leader's yellow bib at the next World Cup.

It also means Anthony has equalled the most World Cup wins by an Australian athlete, with aerial skiing great Jacqui Cooper also recording 25 World Cup wins.

However, Anthony was not the only Australian to snatch the leader's bib in the mogul event on Saturday, with Matt Graham also punching ahead in the World Cup standings.

Graham qualified fifth for the men's moguls final in Val Saint-Come and was forced to endure a lengthy wait before getting to hit the slopes again.

After two hours of delays, Graham was called up to race in the final and delivered a run that scored 83.50.

The run marked his 29th time he has landed on the podium in his career, finishing in the silver medal position behind Canada's Mikael Kingsbury with 85.83.

"Obviously a good day, really happy with the way I adapted given the conditions," Graham said.

"It pretty much rained all day, with big delays before the qualification round.

"We had to sit around for two hours, and then buckle up to do the qualification round is always challenging, and at that point in time, we were not sure if it would be a one-run event or if the finals would happen, so I had to lock in and put in a performance that would give me a good result."
