Round 27 NRL tips: Wrong time for 'grandpa's old medicine' as Storm record points to grim Broncos reality check

The Broncos could be forced into a waiting game to find out if they will bag a double chance in the finals series, with the majority of Nine's expert tipsters picking the Storm to bounce back from last week's horror performance against the Roosters in Thursday night's blockbuster to open the final round of the regular season.

With Jahrome Hughes back in the No.7 jersey and five other top liners who were rested in the 40-10 belting recalled, Craig Bellamy has a team that is close to his best 17 travelling to Brisbane, with the obvious exception of suspended skipper Harry Grant.

The Broncos, meanwhile, have had a bizarre week to follow their 38-30 win over the Cowboys - a performance that was defensively so inept it prompted a good old fashioned half-time spray from Michael Maguire, when his side led 22-18.

If the Maguire hairdryer treatment was designed to remind his players that they were at the business end of the season and needed to act accordingly, it has seemingly missed the mark, with Reece Walsh attracting headlines for drinking toilet water in a social media video, then Origin centre Gehamat Shibasaki turning up to training showing the effects of alcohol.

Shibasaki has lost his place in the side, with Jesse Arthars coming onto the wing and Deine Mariner moving one position in to the centres.

Making light of the situation that prompted the team changes, Andrew Johns hinted that the Broncos had picked the wrong time for distractions.

"Shibasaki, he's gone, he was on grandpa's old medicine," Johns said with a grin on Wide World of Sports' Freddy and the Eighth's Tips.

"What would you rather, turning up to training hungover or turn up with laryngitis like Reece Walsh, drinking toilet water?," Johns asked.

"Mate, my cat does that..."

"He was taking the piss, surely," replied Brad Fittler.

While Maguire has had his hands full in Brisbane, Bellamy has also had some issues to navigate in the wake of his team's alarming performance in his 600th game as coach.

However, he will feel confident of driving his team to a bounce-back win, with the Storm boasting an incredible winning record against the Broncos, to the point where Darren Lockyer has admitted there's a psychological factor in play.

"He always comes across like he's angry but there must be another side to him because he gets them up ... well you've seen his record, it's incredible," Fittler said.

"You can't just keep yelling, so there must be another side to him."

Johns then pointed out that the week before thumping the Storm, the Roosters had been humbled by Parramatta.

"If you're that far off," Johns said, gesturing with a small gap between his thumb and his index finger, "you get pumped."
