A Michael Maguire half-time spray, and Ben Hunt's post-match criticism suggested the Broncos still have plenty of work to do with one round left before finals.

At half-time, the Broncos were leading 22-18 against the Cowboys, with defence clearly not a main priority for either side.

Maguire was captured in the sheds at the break delivering an almighty spray, and it's hard to tell if the message was received with the Cowboys scoring first.

"Have a look at that ... he's filthy at all it, he can't believe it. Most of the time you want your team to look like your character, at the moment they don't look like Michael Maguire out there," Brad Fittler said of the spray on Nine.

However, three straight tries put the result beyond doubt with Brisbane finishing 38-30 winners.

Post-match, Maguire was asked what the message was.

"I just spoke about that they weren't doing the things I know they're capable of and what we talk about," he said.

Speaking to Fox League, Hunt was honest in his assessment of Brisbane's performance, describing it as a "frustrating game" before putting the onus on his backs.

"Some of the plays our back five done for us, absolutely brilliant tonight. And then some of the plays they did were stuff you'd expect from kids," he said.

"It was a bizarre game, but just to get the two points and sneak into that top four is definitely what we're chasing."

Hunt was then asked about the half-time spray and confirmed it was full of expletives.

"I don't know if there's a PG version," he smiled.

"They'd have to put a lot of beeping in there to block it out.

"We knew going in he wasn't going to be happy. He's actually been pretty tame this year but he definitely got worked up on that one."

Superstar fullback Reece Walsh also didn't escape criticism, after throwing an intercept that led to a try. However, his ability was on show when he set up a try for Deine Mariner with a brilliant pass.

"It's really on a knife's edge. I back him in every time, he won us the game tonight.

"He probably almost lost it for us too, but he definitely won us the game tonight. He's an excellent player.

"His skills are phenomenal, I'm going to back him. When he sees something, he's usually on the money."
