'This one was on my racquet': Alex de Minaur 'seeing red' in grim quarter-final admission

Australia's Alex de Minaur continued his horror run in grand slam quarter-finals, losing in four sets to Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime at the US Open on Thursday (AEST).

In a gruelling encounter and the second longest match of the tournament, de Minaur's first serve let him down badly and Auger-Aliassime capitalised in the 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5, 7-6(4) win in New York.

The match took four hours and 10 minutes, with the second set alone running for a remarkable 86 minutes.

The Australian eighth seed made just 42 per cent of his first serves and hit 43 unforced errors, although that mark was surpassed by the Canadian 25th seed who had 50.

De Minaur's record in grand slam quarter-finals now stands at 0-6 and the 26-year-old is ruing not making more of this opportunity after drawing an easier schedule in the first four rounds.

"It is very tough when you work so hard for something, and you constantly are putting yourself in positions to, in a way, prove people wrong," de Minaur said.

"But yet again, you kind of fall, and especially this time – it's a tough one to take. I mean, there's no beating around the bush. It's one of those matches that I would love to play again.

"I played Jannik (Sinner in the Australian Open quarter-finals), and he was just too good. There's not really much I could have done, but I felt like this one was on my racquet, and it is a shame.

"I don't know how I'll handle it. I'm definitely, as of right now, seeing red, but I'll get over it. It's just tennis, right?"

Auger-Aliassime has struggled with injuries and dips in confidence since his breakthrough trip to the US Open semi-final four years ago but brought his best level to Arthur Ashe Stadium as he sent down 22 aces and 51 winners.

"Some days you won't feel your best but I was willing to dig really deep and do everything I can," Auger-Aliassime said.

"It feels amazing. Four years ago, it feels like more. It was a tough couple of years but it feels even better now to be in the semi-finals."

Auger-Aliassime next plays the winner of the all-Italian quarter-final between reigning champion Jannik Sinner and 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti.

"The biggest challenges are yet to come, but that's what I live for, that's what I train for," he said.
