EXCLUSIVE: Andrew Johns fears 'there isn't any' halves coming through Broncos production line

A lack of rising playmakers in Brisbane's talent pool has left Andrew Johns questioning the club's forward planning processes, as the Broncos look to re-sign their veteran halfback.

Adam Reynolds has little intension to hang up the boots at the end of the season, with the 35-year-old eager to extend his career for at least one more year.

If a deal is to be signed, the Broncos would have two playmakers who are over the age of 35 as Ben Hunt is contracted at the club until the end of 2026.

The veteran duo are already the oldest halves combination to be fielded by any team in the competition.

Brisbane's recent slump in form has raised concern around how the team can turn their season around, with many looking to the future and what it looks like at Red Hill.

With the likes of the Canberra Raiders showcasing their young talent this year, eyes in Brisbane are looking to who will replace Reynolds and Hunt.

"The worrying thing for me is that they are the biggest club in the NRL... they haven't got any halves coming through," Johns said on Nine's Freddy and the Eighth.

"They are looking at signing Adam Reynolds (who is) 35. Where are the next players?

"Where is the next halves pushing through? There isn't any, there isn't.

"Look at the Raiders, they've got Kaeo Weekes in his early 20s. Chevy Stewart (19), Ethan Sanders, Ethan Strange, Owen Pattie (all) in their 20s.

"Pretty much, all kids in Queensland want to play for the Broncos... Where is their planning?"

Coby Black has been floated by Broncos great Darren Lockyer as a likely successor for Reynolds in the past, although his first grade debut has yet to occur.

Still, the Broncos will also be looking to fill the eventual holes left by other senior players including Billy Walters, Corey Jensen and Jack Gosiewski, all of whom are over 30.

"They've got the talent. They're the best players," Brad Fittler said when asked if young talent is needed urgently to help the club's slump.

"If you go through all the kids in Queensland they've got them all. Brisbane have the best production line, they always have.

"They are the best players, you don't need different players. They've just got to find a way [to fix things]."

The Broncos sit 11th on the NRL ladder and next face the Titans on Saturday.
