Champion trainer Ciaron Maher is chasing just his second Lexus Melbourne Cup triumph and this time, he’s got the betting favourite.

Point Of Law produced an eye-catching Australian debut last month, taking out the Group 3 Geelong Cup and immediately bolting into favouritism.

The talented three-year-old colt, who joined the Maher stable earlier this year after moving across from Europe, has started to turn plenty of heads.

Across his five career starts, Point Of Law has won three races and placed in another, so the horse clearly knows how to find the line.

He is rated a $7 chance with TAB, as of Monday afternoon, to take out the race and would need to defy plenty of history to make it happen. No horse to wear No.20 on his saddlecloth has won the great race since Gaulus in 1898.

Just behind in the market is the Joseph O’Brien-trained Trustyourinstinct ($8), who will have an in-form James McDonald in the saddle.

The six-year-old gelding won the Curragh Cup earlier this year, which has often been a great form race for the $10 million Flemington feature.

The other horse at single-figure odds at the time of writing is Shockletz ($9), who may or may not have injured jockey Harry Coffey on board.

Hopewell Rock ($10), Juja Kibo ($12) and So You Are ($12) are also in the mix.
