Coach fumes as Sam Kerr denied record Chelsea goal by referee's bizarre miss, lack of VAR

Superstar Australian striker Sam Kerr was denied an obvious goal that would have made her Chelsea's all-time Women's Super League scorer.

The 32-year-old Matildas weapon scored twice in her club's 4-1 victory over Everton on Sunday night, and Aussie teammate Ellie Carpenter also scored a goal as Chelsea moved a step closer to Champions League qualification.

Kerr opened the scoring in the sixth minute of the game, and found the back of the net again in the 47th minute.

Her second goal was her 63rd for Chelsea in the WSL, drawing her level with former club teammate Fran Kirby as the English powerhouse's all-time goal scorer in the competition.

Kerr has now scored 113 goals for Chelsea across all competitions, trailing Kirby by three for the club's all-time women's record.

The team has at least three games left this season - two WSL games and an FA Cup semi final - and the record is well and truly in the Aussie's sights.

It may be Kerr's last chance to break the record given she's been linked to a bombshell move to America at season's end.

She should have scored a third on Sunday night and broken Kirby's record, but her header was not awarded despite the ball clearly crossing the line before the goalkeeper could stop it.

The referee failed to see the ball cross the line and a lack of video technology in the WSL meant Kerr's record goal was ignored.

Her coach Sonia Bompastor was fuming post-game despite the 4-1 win.

"She levelled the most league goals with Fran Kirby but in reality she went top because that goal was a clear goal," Bompastor said.

"I think it just shows again, we need to have the technology next season in this league.

"The league is the most competitive league in the world and we need to be at a really good level in terms of these decisions.

"We won the game by a three-goal difference so it didn't create a lot of conversations, but if we had been in a situation where the goal difference at the end of the season would have been important, then this goal is something I would have been really upset about.

"So that's mainly the reason we need the technology, for things to be fair for everyone."

Chelsea remains a slim chance of winning the WSL title but it seems increasingly unlikely given the team is six points behind Manchester City and also down on goal difference, with only two games remaining in the season.
